New to the Forum - Looking for a new Toy!

Hello everyone - I have been reading through the forum trying to figure out what I want and the more I research the more indecisive I become haha!

I currently have a S&W 642-2 38 special revolver as my CCW, a Remington 870 for shotgun and will be getting a mini 14 tactical in the next couple weeks to a month.

I am looking for a 'fun' yet 'intimidating' pistol haha! Desert eagle is out of the price range but I'd like to stay with something in the 40 to 45 cal range and maintain that 'its fun' and 'oh my gosh'.

My price range would be about $1200 tops although the Glock 23 at under 600 looks great!

Thank you in advance for any assistance/points in the right direction
David

You need to go to a range / that rents handguns ...and fire as many different guns as you can ....

Picking one out of the air is a crapshoot....picking a gun is all about the grip angle, the width, the feel of the trigger as it breaks and resets...and they're all different !! Some have hammers - and some have DA/SA triggers - some are always DA ...and some are derivatives of both ...and stryker fired, etc .../ some have beveled mag wells, some don't, there are dozens of different sight options....and on and on ....

Fit and finish - are easy to evaluate.../but beyond that ...you need to know what you like / and what fits your hands ...so you don't end up with a gun that you hate after you've put 500 rds thru it.

As an example - one of the big companies is Sig ...and I like Sig weapons ...but they have 7 or 8 different models ...and some models like their 226 ( their full sized - double stack guns / come in 3 calibers 9mm, .40S&W, and .357 Sig ...) and within that they have at least 15 different models of the 226 ...SAO triggers, DA/SA triggers, DAK triggers, short reset triggers and on and on .... Personally I like the Sig 226 / in an all stainless in either 9mm or .40S&W ....its a good solid gun, very well built, I like the de-cocker and the DA/SA trigger. I don't like the DAK or the short reset triggers...and I prefer mine with their night sights. A couple extra mags - and you can probably get it out the door for around $ 1,200 ...

but you should shoot XD's, Glocks, Beretta's, H&K's ....and 1911's as well before you decide ...

You might as well get yourself a 1911. Your going to want one sooner or later. You don't have to spend 1,200$ to get a nice one. That being said, don't go looking for the cheapest one out there. Do some research and go handle some.
BTW, you'd be surprised how much fun you can have with a .22 cal. handgun..

Cigarnut:

BigJim gave you the right advice...

Buying a handgun without firing it is like marrying a woman without meeting her first... A big mistake!!!

Once you decide what you want, then you can shop for the best price...

When you say "intimidating", I assume that you mean something that would make the boogey man wet his pants at the mere sight of it.

That makes me think of a Ruger Redhawk, Super Redhawk or Super Blackhawk, a Smith & Wesson .500 or .460 or maybe a Smith 629 with the 8-3/8" barrel.

I have always thought that revolvers are more intimidating than semiautos since the bad guy can see the ammo in the chambers. The larger the bore, the more intimidating.

If you want a semiauto, there are lots of good ones and the Desert Eagle is one of the most intimidating. You might be able to find a used one for a good price. Another possibility is a long slide 1911.

Auto's- Desert Eagle or 1911 with a comp on the end (i don't particularly care for them, but they do look tough.)

Revolver- Ruger Redhawk, Smith N or X frame, Colt Anaconda.

This thread is basically an invitation for me to fantasize what I would do if I had the money... he he he he :D

My idea of fun and OMG - would be the S&W 500. I've seen it fired with both the longer barrels and the shorter barrels on YouTube and it doesn't look so bad, but it does look fun.

My other idea of - well maybe not fun but at least interesting is the S&W Governor.

And the other thing I'm really interested in is the Kel-Tec Shoutgun (KSG) but the earliest that will be out will be the end of this year (best case scenario)

Been thinking about getting a Springfield Armory XD 5" tactical in 9mm and then getting a custom barrel for it and put a compensator on the end of it.

Another thing I think is cool is the Calico Liberty III Tactical. OMG could you hang stuff off of that or what?

They should put picatinny lands on their helical mags, just my advise. The only thing is - when I read the forums I keep hearing stuff about broken extractors, broken firing pins, jammed mags... If I drop that kind of cash the weapon better work and I don't want to be shipping it more than I'm firing it.

Also been thinking about creating a tacticool rifle but I wouldn't use the 5.56 / AR15 / M16 / M4 platform or whatever they are called - I mean basically they look like M16s. I never liked the M16 and one thing that I like about my life right now is that I don't have to clean an M16. If I was going to make a tacticool rifle I would start with Springfield SOCOM II with the extended picatinny rail. Basically no matter what it looks like - it's an M1A and I don't think I can go wrong with it's accuracy and functioning.

This is a picture of it, but like most of the M4 stuff it can be totallly accesorized:
