NEW TO THE FIRINGLINEt AND A NEW SIG P229 owner- Need help on good amo

Dear all hi!

I CAN ONLY DESCRIBE MYSELF AS A ROOKIE IN HANDGUNS, HAVE GOOD EXPERIENCE IN SHOTGUNS AND MILITARY TYPE OF RIFFLES AND MACHINE GUNS GAINED IN A 2 YEARS SERVICE IN THE ARMY.

IN THE PAST I USED A .22 BROWNING OF A FRIEND BUT NEVER A 9.0 MM AS THE ONE CURRENTLY OWNED.

I DO HAVE A PERMIT TO CARRY AND USE A GUN IF NECESSARY AND I NEED ADVICE ON THE BEST AMO. MONEY CAN BUY.

THANK YOU ALL

Can't answer about hte best money can buy, but insofar as good target ammo for a decent price, I've had the best luck with Winchester Winclean and PMC. The worst of all was the Reminton UMC brand. I'll never buy it again.

Good choice on the 229 - I love mine.

For defense, if you have the .40, I'd go with Federal Hydrashok's in 155 grain. If you have the .357 SIG, I'd use the Federal, Remington, or Corbon 125 grain hollowpoints.

For target, I've used just about every 180 grain "plinker" around with no trouble in .40, and 125 grain blazer for 357 SIG.

Greetings Basil, And congratulations on your
purchase of a Sig-Sauer handgun. I believe
that in reading the text of your post, that
you opted for the P229 in 9m/m. Excellent
choice, as far as defensive ammo I like
the Remington 124 grain JHP Golden Sabre's.
I don't recommend Cor-Bon for Sig's; no
sense in battering the frame to death.
After all, good shooter's can place well
aimed shot's into an adversary just as well
with standard pressure ammunition. :) :) :)

Check into ProLoad at their websight or at calibers at greent.com . Check out the Firearms Tactical page in the Links here at TFL. I too am preferable to 124gr in 9mm and dont leave out the new Winchester stuff, it sounds good so far. Foremost is hitting your target.

Basil,

If this thread lives on, you'll probably see some posts asking why you haven't purchased P228 instead if you wanted the best 9 mm SIG.
The question will be somewhat justified -- I'd personally get a .40 S&W instead because that would be the caliber P229 was truly designed for. I honestly believe it's absolutely the best defensive round, all things considered.

But nevermind, P229 in 9 mm is a gorgeous weapon!

Enjoy, and welcome to the SIG world!

Basil,

First, welcome to TFL and to the world of handguns; I hope you will derive much enjoyment form your new interest.

Second, Sig-Sauer's "P" series firearms are among the very best semiautomatic pistols available. I own a P-220 (.45 ACP) and a P-226 (.40 S&W and .357 Sig). Both are wonderful pistols: superb design, manufacturing quality, reliability, durability and out-of-the-box accuracy. You could not do better with a first semiautomatic than any Sig "P" series pistol.

Now for your real question, ammunition:
> There is a wide variety of good target and plinking rounds available; manufactures include: Federal (American Eagle), Remington (UMC), Winchester (White Box), Sellier and Bellot, Fiocchi, Georgia Arms, and others. These are all perfectly satisfactory for general use, practice, plinking, and target work.
> However, I would stay away from the Wolf and American brand names, as well as a few others.
> In addition, since you are new to semiautomatics and will likely want to develop your proficiency, you will probably want to do quite a bit of range work, so ammunition prices become important.
> Many of the brands/rounds recommended above are affordably available at gun shows and at some retail establishments. I use the Internet for much of my ammunition. Well known Internet ammo dealers include Cheaper-than-Dirt, JG Sales, Natchez, and Ammoman. I have found Ammoman's prices, service, unbelievably fast delivery, free shipping, and the wide variety of loads stocked to be superior. Their URL is: www.ammoman.com.
> Finally with respect to personal/home defense ammunition, you will discover a considerable range of opinions exists among experienced individuals. I use Federal Hydra-Shok, but there certainly are other first-rate defensive rounds available. This said, I urge you to do two things to ensure you make the right defensive ammunition choice. First, whatever you select, make sure it works flawlessly in your Sig by shooting at least 50 rounds without failure. Second, please consider your defensive environment; for example, "carry through" is a real issue in some situations (apartment houses, for instance). Therefore, be sure the type of ammunition, its weight (grains), and its muzzle velocity are all suited for your unique "defensive environment".

Hope this information helps and welcome aboard.

Why you haven't purchased P228 instead if you wanted the best 9 mm SIG? ;)

The 9mm P229 is an excellent pistol. If it's anything like the P228 it will chew through anything you care to feed it.

I like to practice with what I use for defense so I choose ammo that lets me do this affordably. I currently rely on Federal Calssic 115 grs Hi-Shok JHP. Black Hills and IMI also make very good JHPs.

So many pistols, so little money.

Basil, I like the Fiocchi 115gr FMJ for practice ammo and the Federal 124gr Hydra-Shocks for personal defense ammo. I get my Fiocchi from Summit Ammo for $135/per case delivered. Forgot to add that I shoot the Sig228 and my wife shoots a Sig225, both 9mm.

Never use cheap ammo in a SIG. Why risk screwing up a $600 gun to save two bucks? The only ammo I use in my P220 and P226 is Federal American Eagle and Hydra-Shok.

Hi Basil! Welcome to TFL. You from Philippines? I checked your profile but you did not indicate your place. Most members here, I mean all members say CCW and not PTC... just figuring.

Hi Robins
I am glad you are also a SIG man. Mine is a 9mm P229. Any suggestions for this gun?

Thanks again

Hi Emin

Thanks for your kind remarks.
I bought the P229 mainly because of its ability to be used in diferent calibers and of good remarks and ratings.
Is P228 so much better? I know is a very good weapon used by law enforcement agencies around the world but it does not allow for the alternative caliber ability.

Thanks

Basil

Dear RWK

I really appreciate your answer and the time spent to respond to my quaries.
I do intent to use Federals (Hydra shocks) but what about the Winchester Westerns Black Talons?

I have a permit to have the gun with me all the time and everywhere for defence perposes so would you be so kind as to be more specific about the "carry through" issue?

Thanks

Basil

Hi there

Thanks for the memo. I chose the P229 merely of the interchangable barrels.
Thanks for the info.

Take care
