I have recently bought a Pre-ban PWA AR-15 but having a hard time finding out the barrel twist and the maker of the upper... there are no markings on the upper or the barrel... can anyone help out...

i have looked everywhere on the gun and cannot find any markings on the upper or the barrel... had the thing tore totally apart... it has me scratching my head..

PWA sold alot of lowers but has been romoured to have made complete rifles as well. I own one that I believe was sold as a lower then had an mint m16a1 kit built on it without the full auto parts. As far as the factory rifles, I have seen several over the years that people say were factory PWA rifles, but I have yet to see 2 alike.

Without pics its kind of difficult to tell you who made the upper or barrel, but to get a rough measure of the twist its common sense.

Step
1. Make sure firearm is unloaded and no ammo in the rifle or the immediate area.

2. Disassemble rifle, remove upper from lower, and reomve bolt and carrier.

3. Take a freely spinning cleaning rod, jag and patch that snugly, but not tightly, fit the bore. Insert this in to the barrel about an inch.

4. Take a sharpie type marker, and trace a ring on the cleaning rod to mark the location of the muzzle. Then at the end near the handle, place 1 dot. You can only put a dot or hash mark here.

5. While paying attention to the dot near the handle on the cleaning rod, insert the cleaning rod while watching the dot move, until it makes 1 full rotation. STOP!

6. Mark the cleaning rod again at the muzzle with a marker making a ring around the cleaning rod.

7. Remove the cleaning rod and measure the distance between the 2 rings. This will be the rough twist rate measurement.

I'm assuming that it is a 1-9 twist. and that this was a complete firearm when orgionally sold.... it's in GREAT SHAPE ! 98% just learning about them and wanting as much info as i can get.

here is an ideal.

Take a cleaning rod and brush to fit the bore.

Mark the cleaning rod, then push it down the barrel until it makes one full revolution. Mark it again, Now measure the distance between the two marks.

If its 7 inches, then its 1:7, if its 9 inches then its 1:9, etc.

Works on any barrel.
