new to single action

going to purchase a single action ruger blackhawk in the next week or so. trying to get some info about what caliber i should get. there are 2 im looking at. price is within 10 bucks, so that doesnt matter. one is a blued 357 with 6" barrel and a spare 9mm para cylinder. the other is a stainless 44mag 10" barrel. now, my only experience with hand guns is 9mm pistols, a few times with a colt python and once a 1911, which i plan to also get one day. my question is: is the recoil of the 44 gonna be bad compaired to a hot 357 load? they are both used and 300 and 310 respectively. i think the 44 is in slightly better condition, and its stainless, which i like. but i also like the 9mm option with the other one, as a cheap source of practice ammo. which do you think is the better deal? thanks for any help

I broke my cherry on a 357 Blackhawk. Great gun. Unless you have a pressing need for a really big bore, then I'd go with the .357. It can be loaded to very high pressures on the 357's, shoot 38s, and 9mm in this case. JMO

I think your barrel measurments are off by 1/4 an inch.

Awe heck, get whatever you fancy.

I would jump on the 357 Magnum/38 Special (+P) and 9MM Ruger. You have three calibers to work with. The 357 Magnum is decent for small to medium game hunting. The 38 Special is cheap to shoot at te range. 9MM will not be the most accurate but, you can share ammunition with another 9MM pistol. Win, win and win. They are becoming scarce the last I heard too.

I'd go with the 357/38/9 also - it'll be closer to what your used to and some ammo interchangeability would be neat. That is unless your looking to hunt with it and your local laws preclude that caliber. (mine do) Then the .44 is the way to go.

You can shoot .44 spl in the big bore, so recoil won't be that big of a deal and you have a new field to practice and work into - that's a nice thing in that direction...

Guess it depends on what horizons you're looking to broaden here!

thanks guys, thats actually what i expected to hear. i think im gonna go with the 357. i can hunt with it here in pa, if i want. i do plan on carrying it when im hunting.. i wonder if i can take it with me in regular season if im carrying a bow:confused: now ive gotta get looking into that. maybe ill get a bigger one later on, maybe a 45/70 bfr  now thats big bore

Although the .44 would be a better hunting handgun that particular .44 BH would be a dedicated hunter or silhoulette shooter with that 10" barrel. It would be too cumbersome to have along as a companion to another hunting weapon. The .357 BH would serve your purpose better.

Convertible!

I have a Blackhawk Convertible and find it very accurate, even with the 9mm cylinder. It's the gun to have around when the SHTF as you can find the major revolver calibers as well as the semi-auto one.

I've got both myself. I'm not all that sure about the .357. I'm still fiddling around with trying to hit what I'm aiming for. The 10" Ruger is a great shooting piece. The barrel is a little long. The 7" Ruger in the .44 would be the best, but that wasn't the choice. The .357 would probably be the best all around choice. Good luck.

One more vote for the convertible

More options as far as ammo and a realistic barrel length

I think $300 is well within the good deal range

picked up the 357/9mm today. i love being in pa where i dont have to wait to pick it up.. because im angry now ;) didnt get it back until after dark, so tomorrow morning, if im lucky, or friday at the latest ill be able to get some shooting done with it. im soooooo excited :D

Try the Poor Man's trigger job on your BH. Remove the stocks and take one leg of the trigger spring off the pin. That will lighten the trigger pull, have no effect on functioning, and cost nothing. If you don't like it just put the leg back on the pin. ;)

Well, keep talking guys! Maybe I'll take my new BH off the market. Heck, I haven't even fired it yet and can't get it to sell at $350. Go figure...

Bad tiiming BullRock I've never been able to sell anything before Christmas.
It seems to be getting haarder to sell period, so I just started trading up
