New to rifles with some questions.

Hello all,
Finally got around to purchasing my first rifle. I had the S&W15-22 in mind for 429.00, then I saw that the S&W15 sport was just another 170.00 so I put a down payment on the sport instead.

Now the idea is that I will get a Ruger 10/22 or S&W15-22 later on while taking advantage of the Sport 599.00 price before it goes up because I wanted a .556 anyway.

Is the Ruger 10/22 a better choice than the S&W15-22?. I like tactical style but it seems Rugers have a lot of flavors.

Thanks for your responses.

That is a tough choice. Welcome to the AR family and TFL.

Both are good rifles and I like the tactacool look also. But in my opinion the 10/22 is a better value at half the cost of the S&W AR-22.

There are more after maket parts for the 10/22 but the S&W has the rails and sights already,

Although the sport will match the S&W15-22, like I said a hard choice.

If it's just for plinking then the 10/22, if tactacool then the S&W-22.

It's not going to be an easy choice.

Have nothing againts Ruger 10-22. I actually like them. You can customize them and accurize them to your hearts or pockets content.

I have both the Sport and the M&P 15-22. My Sport has been great, zero failures, very accurate and does what I want for a basic AR15. My M&P 15-22 has been very accurate and when I used the ammo it likes (Federal Semi- Auto Match, CCI Standard, CCI AR22) functions 100%. I have also used Rem Golden and Winchester bulk. They are more like 95%. I blame it on the ammo as they have a good pin strike on the rim. It mimics my AR15 about 90% (weight difference) but has the same controls. It's definitely a fun to shoot rifle.

Either rifle will serve you wonderfully. If you don't mind the extra cost of the S&W 15-22 then it would make a great companion to your centerfire AR.

Have you put much cobsideration towards a CMMG .22lr conversion kit? If affordability is an issue- there would be no need for a completely different firearm.

Jim, the 10/22 is for plinking.

DasGuy, that Troy Ruger is very nice. Is there a place where they sell it that way? I saw an ATI tactical on the Ruger website that looked very nice too.

Jim243,
I think I am going to have the same problem with rifles that I have with pistols. Can't get enough of them.

10-96, I would probably prefer another rifle rather than a conversion kit.

Thanks for the responses.
