I just acquired a S&W revolver today. I was wondering if anyone could give me a little info about it. This is the first S&W that I have owned. The frame is stamped MOD-10 inside the yoke area, it is 38 special, has a four inch barrel, serial number is c478XXX. It has the original wood grips with matching serial number. I would say the condition is 95%. The blueing is beautiful. I don't want to touch it because it keeps leaving fingerprints.:D

Thanks

Your new toy was built in 1961-1962. It should actually be stamped Mod 10-2, 10-3, 10-4, or something like that. More model 10's have been carried by cops all over the world than any other handgun. They are great shooters, and still being made today. Enjoy your new gun.

It's hard to beat a 10!!
I have several and they all shoot very well.

Congratulations and good luck finding the camera.

The Model 10 is one of the S&W K- frame (medium frame) series, first developed in the late 1800's and still being made. It was at one time the most carried police revolver in the US.
Your M-10 will handle +P (high pressure) ammo, higher performance than standard .38 spl loads. It is still pretty widely carried as a defence gun,but mainly by civilians.
It is a pleasure to shoot, extremely smooth and accurate, and as close to 100% reliable as any handgun ever was. You can dry fire it for practice without worry to get used to the gun before taking it to the range.
The blue is tougher than it looks, but you should get a silicon impregnated gun cleaning rag from almost anybody's gun shop or sporting goods department to wipe it down and remove surface dirt. Also, get a cleaning kit and a few hundred rounds of ammo and...
Try www.smith-wessonforum.com
they will give you lots of information on your model 10.

I have had many of these guns over the last thirty years or so, and they are the best.

Enjoy it.
