New (to me) 640-1

Well, just picked up my first gun, and it's the J frame below. It's a 640-1. I think it's a 1995, since it's pre MIM. Put about 50 rounds through it over the weekend and it worked excellently.

I have had a 649 for several years now. It has been a great gun. A little stout with .357 loads, even 110 grain loads. It is a trusted little piece I wont ever trade off.

You will be WELL satisfied with the 640-1. Ten years ago I did not mind about the recoil and blast with .357. Now, almost "officially" old, I will restrict the load to 38 Special +P. I even find standard 38 Special to be a little "snappy", but I do use a boot grip on mine. Mine shoots just a little to the right (must be a republican). With the fixed sights I must adjust occularly. Plus these things are STRONG. I reload and had a double charge once. Bang, bang - BOOM. It very slightly, almost undetectably, bulged that chamber. Sent it back to S&W and they replaced the cylinder, at my cost, within two weeks. Finally, that stainless cleans up and polishes easily.

That is a great find. I have a newer one with a lock.

It handles recoil surprisingly well. I shoot 357 Magnum and 38 +P through it. The extra weight over the 442 makes it a pussycat for 38+P.

With an Uncle Mike's size 4 pocket holster it fits in the front pocket for an easy draw. My hands are always in the front pockets, anyways.
