New to handgun IPSC, curious about rifle.

After one match, I know that IPSC is fun. I like it.

So, I've also considered getting into the rifle categories too.

The guy at my range showed me his comp gun: a short barrel AR from Schmeisser with "all" the trimmings: conpensator, red dot sight, holographic sight. Looks cool but that is not going to happen for me. Waaay too much €$€$€.

I'm not really fussed about my standing in league tables, providing I am not getting worse.
So, when I saw the recently mentioned CZ 858 on sale, new, for €320 I thought that perhaps the rifle league was not so unattainable, after all.

Would a 7.62x39 semi automatic like that CZ be OK for an IPSC category?

Also, is a bolt action a complete waste of time, in these sorts of competitions? I'd like a .22 rifle but having a use for it sure makes buying easier to justify. I see that rifle has no minimum power factor, and mini-rifle is set at .22LR.

I could buy an entry level .22 bolt and this CZ for less than €600!!

So, what does 150 equate to in terms of caliber? .223 and above? Would factory 7.62x39 be in the minor category?

Also, in terms of mini-rifle class, and IPSC in general, is bolt-action just a waste of time?

I've been looking at bolt action so far, simply because I like the design.

I don't want my reason for getting a rifle to clash with my choice of rifle...

The best idea would be to ask to people who are already shooting rifles before you buy but bolt action will almost certainly be a waste of time for most 3-gun matches. You may see a match or two geared towards that but it is more of the exception than the rule. Semi-auto is the way to go. Most clubs have people who let other shoot their guns so you could probably get away with just bringing ammo (not reloads though) and testing the waters with someone elses gun.

Both 223 and 7.62x39mm will make minor PF. 223 is the universally better choice because it shoots flatter, has less recoil and and better quality guns are chambered for it. 7.62x39mm is fine though if you already own one or are shooting for fun.
 
Power factor is the weight of the bullet times the velocity divided by 1,000.
So, the PF of 150 for Minor scoring can be the 55 grain .223 bullet at 2,700 f/s. if I calculated correctly.
Or any other combination of bullet and velocity that yields the PF of 150.
Anything .223 or larger is ok.
Ditto for figuring the PF of 320, for Major scoring.
Major scores more generously than Minor, as a reward for shooting a more effective caliber.
Same for pistols.
The rule books explain it all.
In the US, except for sanctioned IPSC matches, USPSA rules apply, similar but different in regard to targets and gun catagories.

Thanks for the reminder, but that's been already established.
And they apparently don't have minimum caliber requirements for rifles, in IPSC.
Once again, when in doubt, read the rule books.
