New to Firearms

Hello everyone I am new to fire arms and am interested in some input. I am currently looking to buy my first firearm. I am looking at .22 rifles. I think this is what I would want to get used to handling a firearm (plinking in the woods mainly) I want to keep it inexpensive to keep the wife happy. I found a used Ruger 10/22 40th Ann. at a local dealer for $199 Is this a good deal? It appears to be in good shape there are no extras (scope, case, clips) just the rifle. Any advise on this or other recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thom Rushing..

You would be hard pressed to find a better semi auto .22 rifle. The Ruger 10/22 is both reliable and accurate. There are many, many accessories and Rugers service department is great to work with, even with used guns. Buy it and enjoy it. There are many different brands of ammunition that people will point your towards, you general inexpensive bulk ammunition will cover most of your plinking needs and give you acceptable accuracy. There is no need to buy expensive "target" ammunition. Good luck.

.44mag

I agree with both 44mag & 44-40.
The Ruger 10/22 is a great choice, but $199 seems a little high in used condition.

I checked the GunsAmerica site, & they have them as low as $175 new,
but shipping & transfer fees would increase this amount somewhat.

Enjoy your new rifle.

Marlin/Glenfield model 60's can sometimes be found used as low as $49.
They don't have the aftermarket goodies of the 10/22, and they are rifles, not carbines, and they have a tube feed instead of a detachable magazine.

Don't let the low price mislead you. They are more accurate than they have a right to be.

Thanks

Thank you guys for the input I think I am going to go for a new Ruger 10/22 based on all of the input that I have received at a few forums and asking around. I think you guys are right about the price. I thought it seemed high but like I said I am new to this so I wanted to check with a few in the know. No offense intended to Hal I am sure that the Marlins are great. Thanks again for your input guys.
