Now, read this and weep....
"When Bob Munden started shooting in professional Fast-Draw tournaments at age 11, the first thing he discovered was that the Colt single-action revolver was not designed for Fast Draw - a sport invented by the movies. When his gun broke down, through the processes of experimentation and elimination he figured out how to improve the parts of the single action revolver so they could withstand, with longevity, the abuse of Fast Draw the way he wanted to shoot it: FAST.
Throughout his competition years, Bob continued to improve the original design of the five moving parts of the single action -- and developed several key innovations including Bob's unique modifications of the cylinder notches and locking bolt (called "latch" on a Ruger,) and Munden's Coil Main Spring Conversion™, a major, optional, upgrade on a Munden Premier Race Gun™ that eliminates breakdowns.
Note: A stock single-action revolver (a gun straight from the factory,) is just not ready for repeated use and can be damaged quite easily - and remember Fast-Drawing a stock gun will, without question, damage the gun."
"As a kid, Bob had no money for gunsmiths - and there weren't any around who knew how to build guns to make them hold up through thousands of rounds of Fast Draw practice, and up to 3 tournaments a weekend, in the 1950s. After developing key innovations for building super-strong, reliable, single actions and perfecting his craft, Bob began customizing guns for other shooters as well.."
In Elmer Keith's book "Sixguns" he mentions modifications that can keep the springs from breaking and explains why it will happen when you fan a Colt.
Charles Askins book on Handgunning mentions that the reason the old SAA was so popular was not because it was indestructible, but becuase it was so easy to repair.
Of course, I learned about the fragile nature of Sixgun springs the hard way by fastdrawing and fanning single actions till the parts broke....
One dead giveaway that a used SAA has been abused by fanning is deeply scored cylinders and burrs on the locking bolt cutouts.
