New Taurus 85 UL

I purchased a new 85 UL blue from a local gun shop that had them on sale for $249 brand new. I also bought a new clamshell leather holster from Ray's Holsters ( shado.com ) for $30, fits like a glove. I want to use this set up for my primary CCW. Any input on how I should break in this baby so shes nice and smooth and reliable. Thoughts on cleaning, ammo, or anything else are welcome. Thanks guys!

Good purchase. You'll have a few Taurus haters on these forums, but I've had good luck with the 2 I've owned over the years (one being a Model 85).

I'm also a big fan of Ray's holsters. I've got about 10 of them for different guns. The prices can't be beat for the quality that goes in them.

I like to dry-fire my new guns to help smooth out the trigger, etc. Taurus can have a gritty trigger from the start because they use coil springs instead of flat springs like S&W. It'll make the pull a little bit longer and sometimes jerky. Normally, they smooth out just fine, though.

Ammo selection is a personal preference. Shoot the cheap low powered wadcutters for practice and load up with better stuff. I'm sure that the gun can handle the occasional round of +P even though the booklet probably doesn't say so. If you're worried or concerned about it, Magtech makes a nice 158g HP in standard pressure that works well in my guns.

Post a pic of it if you can...

I'm not much of a handgun breakin believer, so I'd say just shoot it. The first time I shot my M85 UL I took along some .38 Spl's to plink with, and a couple of boxes of Cor Bon 125gr, JHP, +p.

I've been shooting this gun a couple of times a month since April and it's been a hoot. It's also a little pimp gun that fits anywhere.

I find myself carrying this more than other guns these days!!

Hoppies and a good kit are all you need.
Make sure you clean good around the forcing cone, cylinder, and barrel!!
Revolvers don't need much oil. A drop on the crane is all I do!! You don't need to oil it every time either!! Revolvers don't have all the moving parts like autoloaders do!!

I load mine with Remington Golden Saber 125gr +P.
I use this because the box has 25 rounds in it instead of the usual 20!! That means 5 in the gun and 4 speed loaders!!!
Speaking of which, you may want to get some!! They are the original spare magazine!! HKS makes them and the correct model number for your revolver is 36A. They run from $7 to $9 depending on where you get them.

In case you are wondering about the grips they are Eagle rosewood Secret Service grips.
You can get them HERE.

Enjoy your revolver!!!

good gun

You will like your new gun a lot. Contrary to what was posted earlier the Smith and Wesson J frame which is equivalent does not have a flat spring it is coil just like taurus. I find the taurus fairly smooth out of the box actually better than 2 leading american brands I don't want to start a fight over.

I don't care for J frames, that is why I recently changed my carry from the Taurus 85UL shown above to a SW Model 66, 2 1/2" barrel, K frame, .357. I find it carries easily and I don't notice the extra weight.
