New Super Redhawk Owner?

Ive made the leap into the world of Handgun hunting and purchased a new Super Redhawk. I almost went with the S&W 629, but thought the SRH would go well with my 10/22, and I figured the Ruger would withstand things better over time than the 629.

So I now have some questions;

Scopes? When looking at "reddot" scopes what is the differance between a 1" obj. and a 30MM odjective and is a fixed 5 moa dot good enough for deer or should I consider the variable moa dot?

Ammo? Is a 240gr Nosler Partition bullet sufficient to take deer up to 50 yards? I want to keep my shots with this thing down to fifty yards - anything else and I'll use my rifle.

Holsters? Any suggestions? Its use would be strickly hunting.

Does it hurt? I shot a 629 with a 4" barrel a few years ago and dont recall it being nothing too painfull to shoot. But my hands didnt bother me as much then:eek:

I really bought this SRH as an excuse to relaod for 44 mag and I think it will be nice to hunt with out of a tree stand.

Any feedback of any kind would be nice. I hope to get to the range with it tommarow to see if it hurts:(

Oh yeah, I might wait until the end of the week to go to the range with this thing so I want to know what is the best way to break in a pistol like this?

I have been a "convert" to handgun hunting for some time.

Can't answer your questions about red dot scopes as I have never used one.

I have a Ruger SRH in 44 mag and a well placed Nosler Partition works exceptionally well on a deer at 50 yards. Using "hotter" ammo such as produced by Garrett will produce effective results on an elk too - once again at 50 yards. I just don't take longer shots with my handgun.

As for holsters I have used scoped handgun holsters by Uncle Mike's and Bagmaster. Both were across the shoulder models and both worked quite well for me. Preferred Uncle Mike's but Bagmaster was less expensive.

My SRH is the 9-1/2 inch barrel model. It is heavy and, for me, the recoil was moderate. It did not hurt my hands but I strongly recommend that you wear ear protection when you are shooting it. I recommend the electronic kind made by Browing or Pelitor. You can wear them on a stand and hear the world around you quite well. They only keep out the loud bang.

Can't tell you the best way to break in a Ruger. I use inexpensive factory 44 mag stuff and practice, practice, practice. As a handloader I am sure you can make ammo that fits your gun and your hunting needs quite well. Good shooting:)

red dot srh

I have a c-more red dot that I occasionally mount on my SRH .44.
I use a weaver rail mount that fits the factory mounts . I got it from weiglandcombat.com. Works well. I don't use it on the SRH very often, because I don't hunt. My SRH is for last ditch bear or moose defense. The 30mm or 1" measurement refers to the min diameter of the tube. I think rings for the factory mounts come in both those sizes. The c-more I have is tubeless. It's kinda like projecting the dot on a screen in front of you.
The recoil of the SRH is less than any other .44 I've tried. It takes about 100 rounds for my hand to hurt.
I love my SRH!

1. Excellent gun for hunting.

2. Your ammo selection is just fine.

3. I suggest a leupold EER scope. I have tried others with limited success. That hand cannon really dishes out punishment to optics. (I've not tried a red dot, just standard optics, but I am concerened about thier durability in this application.)

I own a Super Redhawk and I reload my 44 mag ammo for it. I placed a Simmons 2X20 gold medalist scope on it and can shoot less than 1/2 inch groups at 25 yards and 1/2 inch groups at 50 yards with it off the bench.

I use Hodgdon H-110 powder with a 240 grain Hornady XTP bullet. Usually like Remington Brass and CCI 350 primers. Its amazing how accurate that revolver shoots with the right combination.

One more plus for the Ruger in this application.

WHEN, not if, you fall in the river, mudhole, sandpit, etc. on a hunt, the Ruger will field strip with a pocket knife or similar instrument.
