I just got one of these bad boys yesterday to start hunting with some. I was wondering is there any scopes under 200 bucks that any of y'all would recommend on getting. I want to be able to shoot at 100 yards but I don't want to spend a lot on a scope. Am I out of luck?

I tried that on my first handgun scope. It lasted 200 rounds :mad:
My dad tried it too. Different brand. His lasted 300 rounds of 44 mag.:(

You will be happier spending more now than you will buying twice.

Burris has a nice option in the posi-lock, not all models have it. It is a set screw that locks the reticle in place against the adjustment screws. Mine is on a 454 Casull and has lasted 10 years and hundreds of full power loads.
 
Even with a scope, shooting at 100 yards requires considerable practice. I shot many thousands of round with my Redhawk .44 mag. Very enjoyable pastime but the scores at 100 yards would not have been possible without much time at the range.
I believe a red dot would be more suitable for what you want. For a scope, do not go over 2X.
Be prepared to also buy a new set of high rings as many scopes won't work with the factory supplied rings.
 
You will find a scope can be very accurate but depending on your skill level and hunting style a red dot may be a better choice. You can get away with more movement and still place a shot on target with a dot where a scope has to be on a solid rest. If a dots is on in a corner but on target that's where you will hit. You can also shoot 100 yard groups in the 3" range with a small 2 to 3" dot or 1' circle dot . I have hunted with both and find that for 100 yard or less a dot is quicker and allows more movement and still get a good shot. To of my hunting buddies use ultra match dots on there ruger 44mag SRH .

My first red dot was back around 1978 and still use one today on a DW 44 mag with aburris 135 speed dot.

Look at Ultra dots. There in your price range and wthe stand dot will work with your rings or the ultra match dot will offer different dot sizes and 30mm tube but you will need 30mm ruger type rings price are 200 and 239 but can be found for less. Ultra has also proven to be heavy recoil tough enough.

My scope handgun was a 308 single shot with a 2-8 power scope and was diedly at longer ranges for a fixed stand but harder to control that scope and was sold as it was worthless as a walk and stalk or close range handgun to me. My first was a 357 revolver with simple low cost red dot that was good for almost 20 years. I took a lot for hogs with that revolver.
 
Just an observation - if a red dot is as good a choice as a scope, then maybe you should try shooting over the iron sights and see how good you can get with those first.
 
A Burris 2x is all you need. The variables are unnecessary bulk on a revolver and parallax issues can cause problems at ranges under 75yds.
 
spacecoast My eyes do not see handgun sights and transfer to a target that well anymore. Or I should say for 17 years now. I just tried a red when I was young and found it to be a great aid for a hunter even when my eye sight was still good. Untill you have tried a good small dot red dot or reflex you may not understand. There is know focusing needed on a red or reflex, just look thru it. You do need to focus on a front sight point before you shot.

Now if your looking to shoot the smallest group possible from a solid rest get a scope. If your going to shot beyond 100 or 125 yards like when I had a scoped 308 single shot . Get a scope. But for an average walk and stalk handgun hunter a dot/reflex sight is almost like cheating.

Make me wonder using your analogy why would the military allow red dots or reflex sight on rifles made for closer range work like the m-4's . Till you try them you just don't understand how quick they are to get on target compared to open sights.

Ok, so i went with a simmons prohunter for 120 bucks on Midway. To my surprise the thing wouldnt hold zero past 20 yards, now i have to return and look for something else. I would like a Burris FastFire red dot for it but i dont know if i should go with a 2x leaupold scope.
 
Choices, choices. You should already know what a 2X view thru a scope looks like with the junk simmons. So if the want the same basic view with a luppy?? go ahead and get one.

Don't buy the speed dot. It is small and light but a better sight can be found at ULTRA DOT. Price run about the same as the fast fire and will clamp right to the factory rings. The UD will also handle a life time of recoil at an affordable price. Price run from 154 bucks to 240. If you want to up grade get the UD match dot and get some 30mm rings for the ruger. It will offer a dot size from 2" to 8" at 110 yards.

Bottom line ,its your dollars and your call. You may need to buy a weigand rail to mount the small fast fire on. Added $$

You will also want to invest in a cross chest hunting rig down the road too. Check out Simply Rugged chesty harness and scoped handgun holster . Not cheap but will do the job very well.

I have a weaver 2X pistol scope on my wife's Ruger SRH. no complaints, it is a fine scope for the money. A fixed 2X magnification allows an inexpensive scope to have good optical clarity, and it is fast on target.
