New stock for Rem. 700 sps Tactical

I just bought a used Rem 700 SPS Tactical (w/heavy barrel) in 223 Rem. I found out it has several small cracks in the stock. All the cracks are about 1.5 to 2'' long. The cracks wont upset the operation to the weapon.

I called Remington who said the weaopn is almost 18yrs old and there is not much they can do for me except offer me another stock at about $250.00. I'm trying to find the best option if I have to spend that kind of money. I like the synthetic stock and would like to get another.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good stock.

Thanks in advance ....Shoes.......

SPS Tactical that's 18 years old? That info came strait from Remington?.. I'm quite sure those have only been around about 5,6 years. Someone correct me if I'm wrong though.

But onto your question, are you just looking for a replacement stock or do you want specific features like a vertical grip? Bell and Carlson makes good stocks at a good price. I gaurantee you with a little looking you could find lightly or even never used oem stock for not too much at all. People replace the SPS stocks like they are going out of style.

If you are looking for a really nice stock, I would recommend Manners. Never shot one, but their reputation is stellar.

If they are offering you the HS Precision stock that are commonly used on many Varmit/Tacticle rifles that is a good price. It would cost you around $360 to replace it without going through Remington.

If it were one of the cheaper tupperware stocks I'd pass.

The standard varmint stock is a chunk hard plastic. The standard tactical stock is a hogue overmold that's $40 cheaper from anywhere else. For $250 he could get a very decent Bell & Carlson.

They used HS-Precision long before the Hogue. If the rifle is 18 years old it is probably a Varmit rifle in the HS-Precision stock.

If you don't want to upgrade to a better stock (Bell/Carlson, Manners, McMillan, AICS, HSP, McRee...), look around on the custom rifle boards in the classified sections. The stock is usually the first thing to go when a guy upgrades his rifle, then they sell the stock for cheap.

I now wonder if this is not a 700P. I'm trying to find photos and make a comparision. I appreciate all the feed back.

I do know the stock on it now has a very nice aluminum block in it and the barrel is floated. It also has a Leupold VII 3-12 scope and tripod.

I think it should be a good shooter, and cheap because it's 223. I am going to call Remington and see if I can shoot 5.56 in it.

I'm now convinced the gun is a Remington 700 Police Short Action in .223 Rem. If anyone knows of a good black stock, that can be had VERY CHEAP, PM me please.

Thanks... Shoes

This is no SPS stock you got there buddy.

SPS stocks are nothing more than injection molded Chinese plastic crap.

That is a HS or Bell and Carlson.

I would take them up on the offer for an HS stock for $250 they are $350 plus anywhere else.

IF you don't want to spend that much look at Boyds gun stocks and get a laminate wood one for $90.

Boyds makes all the factory Remington Laminate stocks.

those are the factory stocks that the VTR's SPS's (short action varmint barrel contours) and perhaps a few others are shipping with now.

Its not the best stock (if you are into very rigid stocks with floated barrels, etc) but it feels good in hand and is very functional.

It will run you 60ish dollars, usually on Gunbroker.

I will add this though, I am not sure the reason behind it, but originally my rifle had this style of stock in green from the factory. The grip inserts were very tacky, kind of like a hogue grip. When I replaced it with a black one (I botched a self-gunsmith job on the old stock) the inserts were more of a very hard rubber or soft plastic, not grippy like the ones on the green stock. Not a huge deal though.
