New Slug Barrel or New Slug Gun?

I am a Mossberg shotgun guy. Not putting down any other shotguns, Mossberg is just what I have been exposed to & what I have. The predicament that I am in is that I need a rifled barrel for my 12 ga shotgun.

Now I can get a rifled barrel from Mossberg for around $180, however, I can get a Maverick 12 ga shotgun (a Mossberg company & compatiable with Mossberg 500 accessories) with a rifled barrel for $247.

What's yalls take on this?

You can get them for less than that $180 if you shop around. Keep checking Gunbroker. Now might not be the best time because hunting season is approaching. After hunting season the prices will drop a little. Also, don't assume that a slug barrel has to be rifled. You can sometimes find smoothbore slug barrels for the 500 at a cheaper price. The advantage there is that you can use the cheaper foster slugs with them. The difference in accuracy is small if you are willing to keep your shots down to around 100 yds or so.

I have a Mossberg with three barrels, a fixed modified, a smoothbore slug barrel and a rifled barrel.
Don't bother with the smoothbore slug version.
The regular modified barrel shoots slugs way better.
At least mine does.
The rifled barrel does require expensive sabot slugs, but it gets more accurate than the other barrels past 50 yds.
Less than that, there's no real difference.
At over 100 yards, it's really more accurate.
At least mine is.
As for whether to buy the second gun with the rifled barrel, instead of just a barrel -
The answer is obvious:
Of course.
Any excuse to buy another gun is a given.

My mossberg smooth slug barrel isn't that great. I like it though, to use as a shorter barrel shotgun, either at home or in the woods. I borrowed a mossie with a rifled barrel and shot some hornady sabot slugs out of it (with a scope) and was pretty impressed. I'm going to get me a ported rifled barrel. An ffl I know has actually ordered one for me.

I bring this up because in order to hunt on a certain property, you have to qualify with a slug gun by placeing 3 shots in the target at 50 yards. We could not do this with fosters and the smooth bore but did it easily with the rifled barrel and million dollar hornady slugs.

Some of the guys had to shoot a lot to get 3 shots in a row, some didn't qualify. I'm guessing they had smooth barrels.

I wonder how the ported barrel is going to perform. Now I need to consider what scope I am going to mount on it. A lot of WMA's are slug/shotgun only, if I can get my mossie to perform as well as the one I borrowed I'll be in business!

Yes

Sorry just saw you were looking at another gun. Always a good idea. The slug barrel is a good idea but go rifled. I have a Mossy 500 with a 18 1/2 inch smooth bore and it doesn't shoot 1/2 as good as my Remington 870 with the 18 1/2 inch rifled barrel. Now I know they are different guns but my buddy has a Mossy with the rifled barrel and shoots great with it.

Scope......Unless you are really looking to push long shots go with a Red Dot scope. No magnification but they are nice. You don't have to worry about how your scope is set when you pull up to shoot.

Good Luck

I agree with others, get a reddot optic sight and you can find rifled slug barrels for less than $150.00 if you look.

I have a Mossberg 500 with both a rifled slug barrel and a 18 1/2 inch barrel.I keep my reddot on at all times and when i'm at home i keep my 18 1/2 in on for h/d and when i step out in the woods i switch barrels and go deer hunting. This is the reason i don't have any high powered rifles, because where i hunt at you can't see more than 100 yards and even then you had better be a good shot, the woods are really thick and heavy.

I wonder how the ported barrel is going to perform

I just saw this, don't waste the money unless it's already done.It makes the gun 3 times more traumatic to the shooter's ears and doesn't help with recoil at all. When i shoot mine i have to have double ear protection and even then it's still harsh. When i'm in the woods i have to wear hearing protection and i get laughed at but i'de rather get laughed at than lose my hearing.
