New Sig P-220 owner...

Just brought home a new Sig P-220 and was wondering what upgrades have they done on it since I had one about eight years ago. Didn't they strenghen the frame and it appears they redid the grip? Any input about the new P-220's would be appreciated. Best Regards, J. Parker

Not sure how much the frame was strengthened but they did do away with that extra milling process that cut into the frame under the upper right of the right grip behind the upper rear of the trigger area, I think. They did redo the grip (more curved/rounded) down the backstrap. They also put the rowel hammer in in place of the spur.

You're liable to get some more links/replies at sigforum.com too. However, I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't more SIG users lurking here.

The 220 is an awesome weapon, but I'm sorry that I don't remember what all other changes were made besides the ones you already mentioned. I believe they went from a flater to a more poke resistant rounded hammer spur.

I think this is the way it goes. Original P220's had a spur hammer, no hammer return spring, lanyard loop in the grip and a Euro mag release. The American version has the push-button mag release and also a hammer return spring, and rounded hammer. 1994-95 or so, frame beefed up.

I think 1997 and on have the newer grip that's stippled rather than checkered and the grip shape was changed slightly to accomodate a different mainspring set up. Love the P220, it's the one that got me hooked on Sigs. As long as you didn't get a lemon, it's one of the most accurate out-of-the-box .45's that's totally reliable.

7 and 8 round mags are available from the factory as well as 8 round followers for the 7 round mags. Mags are now made by Mecgar. Frame cracks are a thing of the past. Big gun, long smooth trigger pull.

The ones I know of are minor frame strengthening, hammer rebound spring, slightly heavier (green) recoil spring for plus P plus loads, 8 round mag capacity, and adaptability to DAO operation.

I have the 8 round followers but prefer 7 rounds under less stress. Had mine factory converted to DAO but went back to DA/SA.

Went to SIG armorer's school some years back; the differences between a 1990 'American' style 220 and the current model are nice but not critical.

Thanks everyone. I sure do like the grip alot better. Won't have to go out and buy a Hogue. I'm fondling it right now in front of the computer. Don't tell anybody but I sold my Glock 21 to get it. Blasphemy!! :) :) Best Regards, J. Parker
