Looking into getting a home defense shotgun
the remington 870 and mossberg 500 caught my attention
which is better? any experience with either?

This is a HUGE, endless debate. My opinion is the mossberg. Many will say remingon, but lately they haven't been all that great due to lack of attention to detail on Remington's part. Many have problems ejection certain types of ammo. they still shoot and function, they are just a little more finicky than they should be.

i see
wish i could shoot and try both but dont know anyone who owns one
i've always heard good stuff about mossberg though so i'm leaning towards it more

Remington 870

• Produced since 1950
• Milled steel receiver
Lots of accessories available
• The most commonly used shotgun by law enforcement and the military worldwide
• Holds the record for best-selling shotgun in the history of the world

I just flipped a coin and here's today's interpretation:
  • If you prefer a Ford over a Chevy, get a Mossberg.
  • If you prefer a Chevy over a Ford, get a Remington.
  • If you don't care, get a shotgun made in Turkey.
See, isn't that easy. :D

If this is too simple, or you like to do a test drive before you buy, then you should wrap your hands around the guns in question and see if one fits you better than the other. Some of the differences between the Mossberg and the Remington aren't a case of which is better than the other, but which suits your shooting style. Look at the location of the safety, I'm a target shooter and don't use a safety, so the Mossberg's safety location is a negative to me -- to other folks it's a big positive.

I have both. get either. I also have a norinco 982 hawk which is an 870 clone. also a good gun. came with ghost ring sights for $200.

the only advantage to 870 has is you can add a magazine extension to it but my mossberg is the model with an extended magazine so it holds 2 more than most.

the best way I know how to decide is to go to the store, look at both. then ask the clerk their age. odd numer-get mossberg even-870

I hate loading the mossberg, that edge on the dog always catches the end of my thumb, harder to take apart compared to the 870.

Go for the 870

I prefer the safety and action release locations on the Mossberg.

I find both equal in tear down with a slight positive to the Mossberg on reassembly.

The fact that Mossberg still has some family involved is a big plus to me as well.

ok here's another question about the choke
can i shoot slugs and like buck shot out of both of these shotguns?
or does it require slight modifications?

Zippy, Most cheap gun companies (redneck walmart price range:mad:) suggest starting with an IMP CYL or MOD...:)

Brent, that's what I meant by 'widest'… Actually, your post wasn't there when I wrote mine, but you pre-posted me -- so mine is really redundant. Sorry if I confused anyone.

This brings up another point:
If you're looking into getting a new shotgun, take advantage of the resources available. Download the manual for each the guns on your short list -- they will answer the standard questions (like what about shooting slugs) that we see here time after time. What these forums are best for is answers like Lavid2002's reply about loading the Mossberg. You won't find those in the owners manuals.

I fondled the Mossberg 500 and to me the 870 seemed more solid but that is not to say the 500 isn't also a solid and dependable shotgun. I do like the loading port on the 500 a bit more because the shell lifter sits flush with the bolt carrier. I'd like to get a Mossberg 590A1 someday.

All personal preference as posted above, I have the Mossberg my younger brother the Remington. I like mine, but handle both and see which one feels better to you.

I actually prefer the Mossberg for these reasons: I like the safety's location more and the action bar is easier to manipulate for me. Other than that, I've got no opinions between the 870 and the Mossberg.
