New Shotgun for me

Just picked up a Mossberg 500 12ga with the 18" and 28" Barrels, full stock and pistol grip. This is my first shotgun and I plan on using it for home defense and maybe some sport shooting. Anyone have any suggestions for things I should get for it?

Try to get lots of practice shooting clays and doubles, and pattern a variety of different home-defense buckshot loads using the farthest spot in your home as your target distance. Use the shell with the tightest or most consistent patterns.

Federal Flite-Control Tactical reduced recoil buckshot in 00 and 000 is arguably the most effective anti-personnel loads available for any price.

I've currently got Fiocchi #4 buck in my shotgun, and rotate the shells in the magazine frequently to prevent the shells from compressing, preventing them from properly chambering. I tend to rotate shells in the mag every few months.

Save the pistol-grip for blowing up unruly ninja pumpkins and warding-off the zombie threat in 2012.. It's not a practical item for serious H-D

Other than that get as much triggertime as possible, and shoot as many moving targets as you can

I'm 6' tall so the stock feels comfortable to me. My wife may be a different story. It was recommended to me to buy a limbsaver recoil pad to replace the factory one. Any experience with it? Is it really worth it?

Sell the pistol grip [while it's still NIB] to some Rambo wannabe then buy, and shoot, ammo with the proceeds.

The Mossberg 500 is very versatile. You made a good purchase.
I used to keep one w/ 18" barrel and pistol grip in my P/U. I've since changed it to a tactical config. w/ light and keep it behind the door in my bedroom.
I have a second w/ 28" ventilated barrel and nice walnut for bird hunting.

anyone have an opinion on the adjustable M4 style stocks? I was thinking I could leave it in the shortest position for my wife and easily slide it out to my size.

I just bought the same gun a few weeks ago. Does yours have Wood or synthetic stocks? I bought the wood stocked one.

Here's a link the the thread aboutMine.

I really like the Fiocchi Low Recoil buckshot for a HD round. 9 pellets of 00 buckshot at 1150 fps and it recoils like birdshot.

As for accessories, I like to keep my guns simple. Only thing I've got on mine at the moment is an Ace slip on shell holder. The cheap sleeve that holds 6 shells on the buttstock.

I'm also gonna get a mount for a flashlight, since it will serve HD duty, but have no other plans for her. Other than ammo and possibly other barrels.

I'm not a fan of the M4 style stocks on shotguns. That's my opinion, so you may find they work well for you, but one thing you need to be aware of is the safety location on the 500 makes it hard to use with a pistol grip style stock.

I don't use the safety much on my gun, most of the time it sits with loaded tube, empty chamber and hammer down. That way I can just grab it, pump and it's ready to go. Now when I'm out on the range, the safety gets used.

Hope to get mine out to bust some clay targets before it get too cold here.
