hey all, great site. been lurking for a bit before i bought my first shotgun. due to my familiarity with them in the navy i acquired a mossberg 590, 12g, 20" barrel with ghost sites. the only mod i plan on doing is a knoxx spec ops stock. i wanna keep it simple yet fun to shoot. see yall around!

Before you drop the cabbage on that knox stock, May I ask you to consider the deficits. The frame is lower than a standard stock so "cheek weld" is not possible while being in proper sight alignment. Face slap is a very real possibility.

The pistol grip negates the supreme ergonomics of the 500/590 layout as you must now shift or fully move your trigger hand to manipulate the safety and action release tab.

The recoil reduction action causes pause in my opinion as to risk of pinching and lack of target requisition as the gun resets after each shot. I personally prefer a good recoil pad on a standard stock over any M-16 type stock. The M-16 lacks any recoil compared to a full power 12 gauge round...
Hope this don't offend you as it is 100% my opinion and just wanting to offer a different point of view...

Thanks for the welcome guys. I appreciate the advice on the knoxx, I was thinking of adding the knoxx powerpak so that I can maintain a proper cheek weld. Or going with the compstock with less recoil reduction. Not sure yet. I saw a used 870 with a tac light for 650 but that's more than I wanted to spend. Felt quite solid though and I wouldn't mind owning one.
 
Saw a limbsaver pad at Wally world today for cheap. How effective are these? May get one to try out before swapping stocks. Also anyone hunt with a similar shotgun? I haven't hunted since I was a kid so I'm new to his aspect of the shotgun world.
 
I have, with my son, compared the Remington 870 with a synthetic stock versus an 870 with a Knoxx system. Both systems are Remington Express 3" receivers with "plastic" trigger assemblies.
With dove loads, no problem with the synthetic so the Knoxx is not really needed...Shoots like a 12 ga shot gun. Solid and a no miss with dove load at 50 yards. (I have no experience with dove hunting, this is range experience!)

However...
With the slug load...ever felt a steel rod being driven into your shoulder, of course with a rubber pad to disperse the steel rod force?
That is what we felt from the synthetic stock.
We stopped shooting the slugs on the synthetic stock and (I) have since purchased another Knoxx for the weapon.
Using the Knoxx with slugs felt like using a synthetic with a dove load...O.K. not quite, a bit "softer" than a synthetic stock, and our shoulders were just fine after, 50+ rounds between us.
So, 'nough said...
If you are going HD get a gun which will accommodate a Knoxx.

Yeah haven't shot slugs but after 30+ rounds of 00 buckshot my shoulder is feeling it. Looking forward to the knoxx and putting some
slugs downrange
 
I am working on range with the open sites versus a Holographic site.

I have hit things, with a large impact, at 100 yards, open sites, but am trying to utilize a Holographic site so I don't have to work "so hard" at "seeing" the object of my attention.

My last time ranging this, the battery died. I used the see-through base to use open-sites. WOW!

Still impressed with the 12gauge...Thought I had to be a meat provider to understand this...Hopefully not, a grocery store is still more convenient...

I thought about the power pak knoxx sells but after chasing "ideas" about what I wanted...I discovered I really wanted something to go "bang" much more than I needed something to look cool! Besides, if you change your mind on the knoxx install of the power pak, you will have some kind of problem. Just info I read. "Play" as you need to, hopefully cheaper than my "playing" was for me!

If all you have is a walmart or windixie to buy meat from, you are getting that tasteless bland mass production meat.
Wild game is both cheap and tasty... sorta like the meat from our local independent grocer.

Right you are!

Simply hoping I can afford store meat for a while longer, I live in So Cal.
Hunting is limited and I could not get the knowledge I need soon enough, nor use it enough to be relevant in today's society.

Gotta go with what I know.
I am somewhat jealous as some of you eat for "free"...

'sides has nothing to do with "ownership"...

about the limbsaver

i have one of the slip on kind on my mossberg 835 slug gun it still kicks but not like it did, and it lost almost all of the muzzle jump, thinking about getting one for my rossi puma .44 mag for my gf so she wont be so gun shy
