New Savage 11 Hog Hunter .223 w/ Range Report!

Came across a deal too good to pass up, Savage 11 Hog Hunter in .223 Rem for just under $450 out the door. I got it this past weekend, and took off the iron sights (for now) so that I could install my Millett TRS-1 4-16x50mm scope, and threw on a JP Benny Cooley compensator I had laying around. I finally had time to hit the range today, and I am completely blown away by how nice this thing shoots. Not only does it have less recoil than my AR (Also fitted with a compensator) which allows me to literally watch the bullet impact, but the trigger is phenomenal. Even with my somewhat rudimentary shooting position pictured below I was able to shoot sub minute groups with ease, my best of the day being .55 moa using cheap American Eagle 55gr FMJ BT ammo. A few pictures to share for now, hoping to get a new stock very soon as well as a good bipod for an upcoming prairie dog hunt.

My deer rifle that I have owned since I was 11 is a Savage 110 .270 Win, so I knew the rifles could shoot. But this one definitely exceeded my expectations.

Another group I shot just prior to the one above. I was almost satisfied, but decided to try one more time after moving the scope 2 clicks right. Still, quite happy with this one.

Anyone else on this site with a Savage 11/111? I'd love to see what others have done with theirs.

Your experience with the Hog Rifle mimics my own, though mine is in .308.

Found one priced right, including a scope, and shelled out the cash. A phenominal shooter, tiny groups the norm. Mine likes heavier slugs, 180 Ballistic Tips, and will stack'em right in there. It will keep the OD stock, which will likely get a NULA style striping, and keep hunting.

The Nikon 3-9x entry level scope is getting replaced with a fixed 6x Leupold when I get around to clamping it on. Heavy duty rings and bases. I had to nix the factory pad, for hunting, it caught in heavy clothing. And I am an accu-trigger fan.

I look at my Hog Rifle as my humvee .308.

I've come very, very close to buying one of those on several occasions in 308. I like a lot about them, but at 7.25 lbs naked I they were just a bit heavier than needed for my intended purpose. Would have been closer to 8.5 lbs scoped. I ended up buying one of the Ruger American compacts in 223 about a year ago. It shoots about the same, but is only 7 lbs even including scope and mounts.

The 223 and a 200 yard target.

I still wanted a 308 and bought the 1st 308 Ruger Predator I saw one week ago today. It has a slightly heavier barrel than the standard rifles and is threaded. It is 7.25 lbs as it sets, but I'll put a 1-4X20 on it eventually and get it closer to 7 lbs. I sorta like the option of irons offered on the Savage, but can do as well or better with a 1X scope.

The Predator 308 and 200 yard target.

Got to agree with jmr that the Savage Hog does have a bit of heft to it, more so than I thought it might. That's unfortunate if you're going to hump it very far, but a plus for any extended shooting like practice or chrono sessions. The rifle also steadies very well for me in improvised or field shooting positions. I'm believing that my intended fixed 6x will shave off a few ounces, while adding to the KISS principal of a hard use rifle.

QUESTION? Not heard of the Ruger Predator.....looks like a American w/ a green stock.....yes?

Say´s Hog Hunter....but isn´t a 223 kinda light for Hog´s, some of them buggers can get pretty big + you have too go through the shoulder to hit the vitals.

Shoot'em in the head/right behind the ear and they drop like a sack of rocks.

While a 223 isn't the perfect caliber for hog hunting,it works just fine with correct bullet placement. We've killed them for many years with AR15's in 223.
I prefer to use my 260 Remington AR10,but I'll shoot a hog with anything I've got on me.

I killed three hogs yesterday with my AR15, one close to 300 lbs. None of them complained about .223 being too light. :) Shoot for the neck or ear.
