new S&W 342...a few quick questions

First of all, hello everyone. This is my first post here, but I've lurked here for the past week or so trying to figure out what to buy for a "pocket" gun. I decided on a S&W j frame and picked up a 342pd at a gun show today. I'm so excited and can't wait to get out and shoot it. I have a few questions...can this gun be dry-fired without damaging it? This is my first dao revolver and it may take a little while to get used to the trigger, and for some reason my gun didn't have a manual in the box so I don't know if I can dry-fire it for practice without hurting it. What are your recommendations for holsters? I'll probably get some type of pocket holster and maybe an ankle hoster also. And finally, what ammunition do you recommend for concealed carry and practice.

dry firing should not be a problem. there might be some bullet weight restrictions because these light weight revolvers can create enough recoil to pull the bullet out of the case and lock up the cylinder. just call S & W for the manual

Congrats on purchase of Smith's absolute lightest .38. I've often regretted selling mine (to buy a 340).

If recoil is too painful, look at some aftermarket grips that cover backstrap. The 342s of early production seemed to have better trigger pulls. Good gunsmith can smooth out either.

$50 + $5 shipping recently invested in pocket holster from www.hedleyholster.com. My 342 was almost "forgetable" on ankle.

I'd avoid 158 grainers for practice. Real thumpers out of 342. El Cheapo brand 130 grainers work for me. For defensive purposes, ya probably want to check out Gold Dot's latest and greatest "magic bullet" ;) for snubs.

This time of year the light weight will be greatly appreciated. Bianchi "speed strip" works well for me as thin "reload" for pocket.
