New Ruger SR-556E

Just got an email from Ruger a little while ago introducing a new SR-556 model. It looks like an economy version of the SR556. It's still piston driven but it doesn't have the rails, back-up iron sights, and it uses a regular A2 style grip from what I can tell. MSRP is $1,369.

I'm not sure, there aren't a whole lot of details on their website about it or what's different between it and the regular SR-556. I'm mostly guessing by looking at the specs sheet. :)

This is being marketed as an "economy" model to the other rifles in the SR556 lineup. The E has a new smooth handguard that's drilled and tapped so railed sections can be added or removed as desired. Also, the gun doesn't come with any of the Troy accessories that ship with the standard 556 and there's only one magazine included.

Mechanically, the gun is the same but much of the chrome has been removed. The bolt and carrier are not hard chromed and neither is the bore and chamber. Gas piston parts retain their plating.

Retail is close to $1,400 but they should sell for $1,000 or thereabouts.
