New Ruger M77MkII Synthetic Stocks

I saw a new synthetic stainless MkII today in 30.06 at a gun shop. In fact, I did a double take, couldn't believe my eyes. It looks great and seems real light, maybe lighter than the old stock. It is hollow and makes a hollow noise. It also appears stiff, a very important attribute.

Does anyone have one of these stocks? What do they look like inside? How does the rifle shoot with one. I'm tempted to buy one from the factory to replace the paddle version but the one is super strong and allows the rifle to shoot MOA. I don't know if I want to screw a good thing up.

Haven't seen it yet. How's it different from the synthetic stock Ruger's been using for the past ten or twelve years? -- Kernel

A friend of mine also has a SS MkII in 30.06 with the old, UGLY "paddle" stock and the rock solid butt rubber plate. He wants to upgrade the rifle without degrading its superb accuracy. We were considering the Hogue overmolded stock with the aluminum frame, has anyone has any experience with that one?

The new stock's shape is very much like Ruger's wooden stock. However, it appears thicker from the grip to the buttplate than the wooden stock, not dissimilar to a Winchester .375 Safari. That said, it is hollow and seems very light. The forearm also appears very stiff like the old stock.

Although I think the old paddle stock was excellent in all respects but for appearance, this stock is much more attractive; I hope its performance is up to the old stocks.

The old stock was hollow also, and like you said, it's an excellent design by all accounts except it's God awful looks and the fact that it lacked swivel studs. This new stock sounds like a step in the right direction. I wonder if it'll have studs. By the way, Ruger old synthetic stock is available from Brownells for $150. If the new stock is in that ballpark I might get one for my 6.5x55 M77 MkII. -- Kernel
