New Rifle & Scope / Scope mounting Question

I recently purchased a Remington 700 5R, with the 20 inch threaded barrel. I decided to order a Zeiss MC Conquest 4.5-14x 44mm w/ Rapid Z Reticle.
I used a one piece Weaver base (rail type), with Warne Rings. Mounted the scope and everything seemed fine.

Shot the set-up for the first time to sight it. Started at 50 yards to get on paper. Even though I had the windage dialed all the way to the left, and the elevation all the way UP, I was just barely on paper, with no more room for adjustment on the scope. Still shooting about a foot to the right and 8 inches low! I was praying it was the mounts or scope and not the rifle.

So I switched the Zeiss (still in the Warne Rings) over to my AR in 6.5 Grendel, which I knew is fine. Same result, Scope adjusted all the way to the left, and up, but the rifle was shooting about 6" Right, and 5" low.

Then I put the scope that was originally on my AR (still in it's Millett Rings) and mounted it on the REm 700 (same Weaver base). The gun shot fine! One hole groups and quickly zeroed in.

So I am assuming the scope is no good?

My question is, could the Warne Rings be the problem? Should I try another set of rings before I send the scope back to Zeiss? Just hate to spend the money on another set of rings if they could not possibly be the problem.

Thanks!

You troubleshot it the way I would have, having the ability to swap out scopes/rifles is a help. Since the result was repeatable, and the scope had the same effect on both rifles- sounds like it is the scope to moi.

It could be the rings, I would swap them out as well if you can. If not, I'd send the scope back to Zeiss, or better yet since it's brand new I'd just return it to the retailer you purchased it from and ask them to send you a new one...

I know some people have shimmed their bases or rings with metal cut from a pop can. It's not an elegant solution, but it's effective in gaining elevation range. Done right it's not noticeable.

Is it possible to swap the front and rear rings?

Your question should have been posted in the "smithy" section of this forum. Lots of folks hang out in that section, who can help you with any question you might have regarding scopes, rings, bases, & how to properly mount the system on your rifle. Thanks !!!!

Since you're using a Weaver base, try the Burris Signature Zee rings with an offset insert kit. You won't have to shim the base and should be able to sight in your scope.

Sandbag the rifle, take the bolt out, look through the barrel and see where the crosshairs line up. You should be able to get the scope adjusted close enough to hit paper without firing a shot.

Sorry about posting in the wrong section!

I saw the Burris rings with inserts and may give those a try. If I end up getting new rings, I will probably go with those. I am going to try the scope on a friend's rifle with his rings first. If it's the scope that is bad, I want to send it back, rather than compensate for it with special rings or shimming.

I'd try another set of standard Rings before I went the Rube Goldberg route , ( shims ) ! Maybe even a different Base too . Todays Manufacturing practices usually allign the Scope mounting Holes with the Center of the Bore , within a couple of thousandths of an inch . But like everything else , the Ball gets dropped once in a while . The elevation issue could be Mounts or Scope . I'd try the Scope in the AR Rings . If that doesn't work , you have pretty well narrowed it down to the Scope !
