New Rifle Is On The Way

Just got the email from Bud's. My new Savage will be delivered on Tuesday. I plan to give it a good once over cleaning and take it out on Thursday for its first range outing. Many pictures will be taken, and you will all get to see my new bundle of joy.
This is the first time I have had a centerfire rifle, and I have read a lot about "breaking in" a new barrel. Is there a reocmmended procedure for the first time I take it out?

I shoot mine the same way from the first shot on. Never worried about breaking one in. Both of my Savage 10's shoot just like they did on day 1, dead nuts on. Never have adjuste the tirggers or scopes since getting them zero'd. If the group opens up to 1" I clean it and it goes right back to where it was, .5" or better.

UH OH!!!! Can of worms -> Opened

You will get many different schools of thought on this one...

Any time I buy a new rifle:
take it home
clean it
take it to the range, sight it in
shoot for groups
take it home
clean it
put it away...

Break-in is a myth to many, including me. Others swear by a break-in procedure...

Why waste ammo if you don't have to?

Congrats on the new gun. What caliber did you get? I'm with Saltydog235, I never "break in" my new guns. If while shooting the groups open up I'll clean or I'll clean after every outing.

Her you go, it's Gale McMillan's thoughts on barrel break in:

Check it out and draw your own conclusions. My thoughts are that it's unnecessary, just keep the barrel clean and it should be fine. It's your rifle however and if you feel that breaking it in is warranted then go for it.

Depends on what you like. Breaking in a barrel according to many that sell barrels will improve its accuracy and preserve its quality. Breaking in a barrel by shooting it alot lets me have more fun shooting which is why I bought the thing in the first place. Your Savage will be easier to clean the more rounds you eventually put down the barrel as your shooting and cleaning smooth the bore or you could use Tubbs Final Finish System to do it quickly. However every barrel eventually wears out if "enough" rounds are fired and I see no point in wasting my fun on breaking in or "fire lapping" my barrels.
I recommend having fun and keeping it clean.
Note: bore guides and coated cleaning rods do help protect the bore.
All the best,
Savage FCP Win 308, 0.48 MOA best so far with TFL coached handloads.

I agree with what people are saying here. Give the barrel a very light cleaning prior to going to the range. Once you're there, just sight in for groups. Clean as normal when you get back.

AllenJ - it is a model 10 in 7mm08.

Thanks guys. I kind of thought that all those procedures I have read about might be bunk. I'll just go ahead and shoot it, and then let you guys know how things turn out. Once again, thanks!

I have dozens of dozens of milk jugs saved, Mikey ..... give me a call and we can figure out a time to go bust 'em....
