New rifle, again!

As my single shot project winds to a close I was persuing the local pawn stores looking for something else to refinish and I came upon this guy:

It is a New Haven 250K stamped Mossberg and Sons.

The thing I love about these old rimfires is that this thing is huge, it is easily 36'' and maybe 5 or 6lbs. The other thing I love about them is that many people don't see their potential beauty, so I nabbed this one for 50$.

I'm planning on giving it the full treatment, cleaning, refinish the stock and possibly a reblue.

Here are some pictures:

One question comes to mind at this point: are the grooves on top of the reciver where I would mount a scope? or do I have to get this tapped?

Thanks.

ndking: I bore easily. So, sitting around for more than 5 minutes is generally out of the question. I want to spend the rest of my vacation shooting, so finishing the rifles this week would be perfect.

Is it something like this?

No it is not. First off it is a 3/8 inch scope base and uses a different type of mount/rings than a centerfire rifle does. Just go to Walmart and look in their sporting goods area for 22 rimfire rifle scope mounts, they come in two single units that attach to the scope and fit in the grove.

I know right? Something not right about that curve towards the bottom, reminds me of a knee. Its a big stock too, it would be way to big for a child.

I found this interesting:

It seems my rifle has only appreciated 13 dollars since 1961.

hand oiled american walnut

Here is a shot of the stock before:

and here it is after some stripping, sanding and oiling.

Not to bad for 50$, seeing as a new walnut stock for the 10/22 runs about $140.

Well, this one came out pretty nice I think. I like this rifle a lot because (to me anyways) it looks like a full sized hunting rifle. The blue looks great on most of the barrel, but I had some unfortunate streaking on side. Also, the blue didn't take to the reciever, and it came out more of a rust color. Maybe next week I'll try it again. I picked up a scope which I'll put on today, and tomorrow I'm headed to the range. Range report to follow.

What do you guys think?

I like the way the gold screws look on this dark wood.
