New Revolvers and a question/concern

I have bought two snubbies in the last month. I have Taurus Model 85 UL and just picked up a S&W 431PD. Now, I have pulled the trigger on the Taurus more since i got it first but the S&W trigger pull is just horrible. It is not rough but the DA pull is so very stiff. My wife has a hard time pulling the trigger and the 431 while she really likes the Model 85.
Is there something I do not know about? Does the 431 need a trigger job right out of the box the make it as useable as the M85 is?
I know that many believe that S&W are outstanding and Taurus is not but I have had nothing but goodness from my Taurus weapons. This is my first S&W and I am not impressed.
Myabe it will get better. I hope.

If anything did you buy it from a local dealer?

If so take it back and ask why the trigger pull is horrible... Smith's usually have pretty nice triggers on them with not too bad of a pull. I'm more of a fan of the brutal Ruger trigger but hey it works for me.

I understand your concern and it would make me wonder too especially with how everyone on here praises the trigger on the Smith's.

Good luck, and if you have a buddy who knows guns well have him take a look at it, only if he's willing, I wouldn't impose on anyone like that cause he might make it worse :D

Everyone praises the S&W, but only the larger frames (K, L, N) have decent triggers out the box ( and they need some work). The J-frames have never had much of a trigger IMO, but to be fair it's totally different. If you go to gun stores or shows and try the brand new models you will find that the small frame Taurus revolvers do indeed have better triggers than the J-frames. I can hear the grumblings starting from the S&W fans, but go and try them out for yourself. The M85 has been a good little revolver for quite some time.

I agree with Majic. I've tuned my own k- and n-frame Smiths to butter-smoothness. I had a Taurus 85UL. It did have a better trigger. A competent gunsmith can make the 431 trigger better, with a spring change, and some judicious polishing.

I don't like small frame anything!!! And, I own more Smith's than any other revolver. And, yes I do prefer Smith's. I have a couple with action as sweet as Colts! And, I don't disagree with Majic. Only my Colts have consistantly better triggers than my Smiths. Having said that, I have a M29-2 with action to die for.

I own a Taurus 85 and 85UL and use them both for summer carry. Of all the small frame revolvers, I have experieced these are the only two I still own. They are both nice shooters. My 85, 3" is the best shooter of the two. Very crisp SA. The DA is a little long, but smooth. I also have a new Taurus 689 on the way here. If your Smith has a bad trigger, take it back to the dealer, send it on to SW, take it to your GS for a trigger job, or trade it. And, good luck :D :D

Thanks for the replies

I continue to sit on the couch and pull the trigger (on snap caps). The SA is nice and crisp. I feel that it is the mainspring strength that is making the DA feel as it does. I guess the M85UL has a slightly smaller mainspring. After pulling the M85 trigger hindreds of times, it has smoothed out nicely. The Smith is smooth but stout. My wife cannot pull the trigger with the pad of her trigger finger but has to use the first bend at the joint. I will take it to a gunsmith and see if the spring pressure can be modified without affecting reliability
I really appreciate your inputs. My son said his 686 took several hundred rounds to smooth out some.
So, off to the range soon
