New Revolver

I am wanting a 357 revolver. What suggestions do yall have for a good one. Preferably one that costs less than 500.

Smith & Wesson 19, 586 or 686, or Ruger GP100. Good used ones are an excellent buy. I'm a Smith guy, but I really liked the GP100 I had for a while some years ago.

I just picked up a Rossi 972 6 inch barrel Stainess for 428$ out the door. Seems to function well. I'll shoot it this weekend and give a report. I also have an older Rossi 720 in 44 spl. Shoots like a dream. I expect the same from this pistol.

What is THE most important factor? If you demand quality but want to keep the price as low as possible, try to find LE or DOC trade ins on Smith & Wesson Model 65's. When the big local gun dealer around here got a large shipment of these in last summer, they sold them at $399 and though they had definite external use & finish blemishes, these were fantastic buys for awfully good handguns.

Next place I'd look for quality gun at low price would be a Security Six.

Taurus is too hit & miss, like pulling the handle on a slot machine. Rossi is simply a brand owned by Taurus these days.

Big Security Six fan here.
They have the balance and feel of the K-frame 19 but the strength of an M1 Abram.

To get a better answer you could give a little more information.

Do you want a single action?
Are you looking for a small, medium or large revolver?
What are you going to use it for, plinking, carry, hunting, home defense?

All these factor into making a recommendation.

I'm a Smith & Wesson/Colt/Ruger guy normally, but I looked at a Taurus 66 stainless yesterday, and I was sorely tempted. I was marked as a used gun but I don't think it had ever been fired. In spite of all the flack they catch here, I've always had good luck with Taurus revolvers. I just check them out the same as I would any used gun. It was tagged under $400.00, too.

I think if I wasn't working on buying a Parker shotgun, I'd have bought it.

For the money I don't think you can beat the Ruger GP100.

Yep....otherwise you'll just get the proverbial "Get one just like mine!"

I carry this S&W Model 60 with 357 rounds. It's heavy enough,so it's not hard to control, but light enough for conceal carry.
And it surprised me with how accurate it is.
It's one of my regular carry guns, and as a matter of fact, I just took that picture here at work on my desk.

As a general rule, police trade-ins are a great deal. They usually have exterior wear, but have been fired very little and are functionally perfect.

Otherwise, and unless the buyer is an expert at checking over a revolver, buying used depends on trusting the dealer and getting a good warranty from him.

As in new guns, there are brands to be either avoided or given a detailed checkup before purchase. Most folks here know which ones those are. Also, it may be a good idea to avoid even high quality guns if the maker is out of business or has discontinued that model.

When purchasing my .357 revolver I considered both the GP100 and the S&W 686. I opted for the 686+ with the 7 shot capacity and 4" barrel. The extra round was the determining factor for me. My brother on the other hand chose the 4" bbl GP100 so I have had a chance to see, handle and shoot them side by side.
They are both equally accurate felt similar in my hand, the GP100 weighs 1 oz more so I would judge it to be a toss up. Either one would be a good choice.

There -ARE- good Taurus guns out there, I am sure of this. Absolutely sure of this! The problem is getting one of them. So many pitfalls trying to find a good one. Often hard to tell what you've got until you've wrung it out.

I have a 6" Taurus Model 66 that is as accurate as any revolver I've got, but the timing is wonky and the headspace is on the VERY short side and it light-strikes in double action constantly. But it's hella accurate, and a darn good looking gun with a very quality, durable finish.

If it wasn't accurate, it would be less annoying because it would be gone.

There are a lot of great choices out there, especially if you aren't afraid to buy used. These are some of the choices I would consider

Smith and Wesson Model 66 or 19
Ruger GP100
Ruger Security Six
Ruger Blackhawk (single action)
Ruger SP101 (not full sized but a 4'' barrel would make a nice little companion for the woods)

All of the above can easily be found for $500. Probably much less with a little patience and sharp eyes.
