New Revolver

OK, for now, I own 5 guns (4 pistols, one rifle). . . all of them semi-auto. I am thinking about getting my first revolver (as well as my first bolt action). I am thinking something with a barrel between 4 and 6 inches. I would like it to yield performance above what I can find in my auto's (save maybe my 1006). I was wondering if you all might be able to point me to some good choices I might consider as a starting point. Thanks.

Since you are looking for more power than the average semi-auto, you should start with 357 Magnum or larger. The 357 will pretty well equal the 10mm in power. If you are looking for a heavy hitter, then look at the 41 or 44 Magnum or a Blackhawk or Redhawk in 45 Colt. It is hard to go wrong with a 357, very versatile, loads from light plinker to deer killer.

I vote for an ole Smith & Wesson 66 or a new Ruger GP 100 SS 4" .. both .357 Mag. Can, of course, use as .38 spec / +P shooter too.

Just my 2 cents.

Check out the Dan Wesson Model 15 or 715 if you like stainless. It's as strong and accurate as any .357 Mag around. Barrel length, balance, and weight changes are no problem. Swap them out at will. One great feature of the DW 15/715 line. You can get a model 22 or 722 in .22 LR, that is identical in size and balance to the .357 Mag.
If you prefer a .44 Mag look at the Model 44 or 744. Same statements as the 15/715 apply.
Good luck with your search.
Take Care

In case you aren't already aware of it, S&W has the model 610 revolver, which is a 10mm, and also shoots 40 S&W. I know it doesn't meet your 'higher power' requirement, but wanted to mention it, since you already have a 1006.

I have a 610, and it's a joy to shoot.

Ken.

Uh, biggest question is, what calibers are your current semi-autos?

1 is in 10mm, that's a given.

But if the others are .22, .25, and .32, it's a given that just about any revolver in .38 caliber or above is going to be more powerful.

Well, you could try a S&W 625 .45 that should preform at least as well as most auto's.;)

OR

S&W 686 .357(6 shot) or a 686+(7 shot.) with a 4" barrel.

I think we need a little more relevant info, like what guns you currently own, potential uses for the wheelie (Nightstand duty, concealed carry, long range target shooting, plinking, hunting, small game, etc.) how much you see yourself spending on it, how much ammo per week, new or used, SA or DA, etc.
That way, it will make sense, and it wont be a bunch of people telling you to buy what they have.

Recommendation

FWIW, my recommendation would be to find a used S&W Model 28 (Highway Patrolman) in either the 4" or 6" version. It's a large (N) frame revolver that will help reduce felt recoil when shooting some of the more intense .357 loads. Extremely accurate with adjustable target sights. Also good for shooting .38 SPL when just "plinking" around. Good shooting.

I have thought about one of those Smith 610's, now, myself, especially since they're now approved in the PRK.

Buy do consider the .44 mag. Even if you don't handload, it can shoot everything from mild .44 Russian cowboy loads, to bear-whacking full power loads. Most are darn accurate, too.:D

GP100

I second the vote for the Ruger Gp100 4 or 6"....Great gun for the money....although s&w triggers are hard to beat,I had my GP worked on and it is as good as a s&w....I have the 6"...it's my "have to actually hit something" gun...very accurate(the gun more so than me)....good luck, revos can be addicting...luckily you can find lots of them cheap because everyone's out buying Glocks and shooting them sideways:D
