New Revolver for my wife (what to get her)

Well my wife has really been having fun shooting with me and now she wants meto get her a gun. She has been going through my gun magizines and she likes the looks of the Ruger Blackhawk. I keep telling her its going to be too big for her hand but she won't listen to me. So should I go ahead and get it for her and them end up buying her another gun (like the Lady Smith) or should I buy something I know she will be able to use. I'm not rich so I can't afford to buy a gun just because of a mistake she made in selecting it. What does everyone think ?

First I would let her decide on caliber and then which model. Rent some at a local range so she can experience them firsthand and take her to a gunshow so she can handle different ones. I have small hands and have no problems with any of my Ruger SA.

There's something to be said for letting the user pick something they want -- they may shoot it more/better. :D But, your concerns are valid...

Have you tried either a Bisley or one of the Bird's head grip Rugers? They may work better for a smaller hand. (I'm going on memory here, so if they aren't actually smaller, forget I suggested that possibility. ;) )

Important clue: Let the end-user pick. :)

If you are seriously concerned about the Blackhawk being too big for her, let her handle one next to a Single Six. ;)

is this gun going to be for her to carry concealed or to keep in house, and range fun.if for carry i would say a mini glock or if she prefers revolvers i would say a snubbie in 357,but load 38 speacials in it for here like a 158 grn jhp wad cutter.mini glock 9mm with a 124+p jhp is nice or if she is ok with a little larger show her the g23 .40cal great carry gun.remeber what ever you get her make her pratice with it. :D

Rent a variety of revolvers at a range so she can get a feel for them. Let her do the selection. I did this with my wife and she settled on a snubbie .357. I tried to venture an opinion but that is what she wanted. She now owns three different .357's; the Taurus 605, 3" GP100 and a Model 28. She likes the .357.

Well this afternoon my wife and I went and looked at some revolvers. She held a couple diff. guns (Blackhawk 44 mag., Taurus 357 mag., and a ladysmith 357 mag.). She has shot my 44 mag (model 639 smith) and does not like the amount of recoil it has. She has decided to go with a 357 mag. and I think she has decided to go with the lady smith (60LS). Its a very nice looking gun with Rosewood Grips and stainless steel finish. I think its going to be a great choice. :) Thanks for the replies everyone.

What the hell is a 158 grn jhp wad cutter????????? Sounds as though you should stick with your screen name as a handgun choice and leave the revolvers alone. ;)

Back to the topic, your S&W is the M629. If your wife hasn't tried the M60 in .357mag then get her to try a M66 before you buy. The M66 is slightly bigger and will help tame recoil even better. The triggers on the M66 (a K-frame) will be better than the trigger on the M60 (a J-frame).

Isn't there still a 65 LS in .357? That would be a nice choice; only drawback would be that the fixed sights are probably harder for a new user to get a good sight pic with.

60LS Review

Alaskanmonte,
My wife is also interested in a wheel gun. She loves my 25 year old DW715VH in 6". She bought a Glock 19 for carry, but wants something with less recoil/slide action for hunting. She loves the Glock, but isn't as accurate with it. I suspect it is due to the light weight gun and the slide banging back and forth.

She has expressed an immense interest in the 60LS. So much so she printed a picture from SW's site and has it posted up in her office. Yeah, we own the company so she isn't breaking any company policy. We encourage gun ownership.

Let me know how your wife likes the 60LS if she gets it. My wife plans to use .38 in hers when she finally breaks down and springs the dough for it. What a tight wad.

My wife has a 60LS. She likes it a lot, though she doesn't carry that often. She'd rather have the weight of a 442 without adding the recoil that comes with it. Wouldn't we all.

"another man's wife"

I have shot my husband's handguns but felt drawn to the revolver. Recently, we purchased a snub-nosed 357. I absolutely love the feel of it in my hand and prefer the way it loads. I practice with wad-cutters, but always end our shooting session with 357's. The kick-back is not bad but after shooting 6 357's my hand is a little sore; sounds crazy, but it is more the "vibration" of the after-shot. Still, I get better with it each time and like the choice that I made.
