New Revolver Fan

My wallet may be in trouble - now I like auto's AND revolvers. I have several autos including SIG and Colt .45s, Makarov .380, KelTec P32. But I haven't been satisfied with with them as everyday carry guns, each for different reasons. So while looking around for another candidate, I wandered into The Revolver Forum a week or two ago. Reading one thread lead to another, and soon I found myself wanting a S&W 642. Luckily there was a major gun show in the area this weekend, and I walked out of there yesterday with my new Airweight. Placed my online order for a Mika pocket holster a few hours later, should have it in a few days. Meanwhile the revolver spends its time in an Uncle Mikes. I am pleased with the weight and feel, and am impressed with how well it doesn't print when in a front pocket.
Took it to the range today, put about 100 rounds through it, and left with the satisfying feeling that I have made a great choice. And for that I'd like to thank the many posters in this forum who have already made replys to others that answered most of my advance questions.

I do have one question though. Is stress on the cylinder a concern with backpocket carry (will weight from sitting etc eventually cause a problem)?

Regards,
John

I have occassionally carried my J frame in small of back and have not had any problems. If carried properly I don't see any reason why there would be a problem witht the cylinder.

Unless you are heavy enough to crush the cylinder  , you shouldn't have any problems other than a sore cheek if you sit too long.

jwk,
Be very, very careful. those little J frames have a way of mulitpling. The 642 is my favorite snubby. I've carried mine in a pocket off and on for several months and haven't had any problems with it.

Thanks for the answers. I doubt that I will carry in a back pocket much, if at all, as the grip protruds a bit. My workday dress is "business casual" with no jacket, so complete concealment is necessary. Would prefer a waistband holster of some sort but that is not an option most days. I should have specified that my concern was with the frame where the cylinder is hinged, not the cylinder itself. I am not exactly light, but do not think that even I would crush the cylinder by sitting on it! :D

So it's settled then.....a snubbie prints LESS in the front pocket than say, my KelTec P3AT, due to the cylinder bulk breaking up the outline? Or is this debatable?

That would be my opinion. I have a Keltec P32, which I believe matches the KelTec P3AT identically in size/shape, and I would have to say it would take a better trained eye to id the snubbie in a pocket vs the P32 despite the additional bulk.

I should also add that for backpocket carry you'd probably be better off with the Keltec. The 642 protrudes out the top of all my backpockets due to it's bigger dimensions.
Something to keep in mind with the Keltec is that, on the P32 at least, the magazine release is not recessed. On several occasions I found that the magazine was partially ejected due to the release having had pressure applied while in my pocket. I solved this by using a left hand holster that has a square flap on the mag release side and cut a small hole in the flap over the area where the release is. Has worked so far but still, when looking for 100% reliability, that remains a concern.
