New Remington Plant

Woo-Hoo! Remington Arms has just announced that they will be opening a new manufacturing facility here in Huntsville, AL, within the next 18 months.
One of the factors in this decision was the 2nd Amendment friendly attitude in Alabama, compared to that in New York.

Empire State?....

Is Remington/ATK going to move entirely out of New York to AL?

It's good for them to relocate out of the Empire State but will this be just 1 new plant or the whole gun system?

Clyde

According to Remington (and NY officials), no jobs will be "leaving" NY State.

Apparently, "we would expand here but your state sucks so we're going somewhere else" doesn't count as "losing" jobs.

Today’s announcement will create more than 2,000 jobs in Huntsville, and reflects a statewide capital investment of $110 million.

NY has a funny way of not losing jobs (LOL), sorry Brian. You have one strange group of politicians.

Huntsville makes sense. High-tech area and NASA recently laid off 14,000 people with other layoffs going on too in the surrounding aerospace/military-contractor biz. That means cheap warehouse/industrial space available, workers for miles...yup.

There's also going to be some satellite facilities in the Ft. Payne area where there's all those empty sock mills available for a song.

Ilion NY is Remington, a town built around one of the largest manufacturing facilities in the US. Of course, with New Yorks hatred of the 2nd Amendment, they don't want to admit they're losing jobs, and that Remington is not upgrading its facilities.

The first thing Remington did, after acquiring Marlin, was to move them, and one can hardly blame them. I bought the original advertising photos and negatives for the LC Smith and the Marlin 39, including the Annie Oakley Ed., from a guy who was losing his job, and happened to find these artifacts being thrown out in the garbage. What a shame.

While I am glad to see a potential new plant opening up, I am a bit confused by the various news articles, on just exactly this will be.

militarytimes.com said:
...The facility will be set up for new product development and manufacturing, but it reportedly contains spaces suitable for offices, an auditorium and classrooms that will be used for training and development purposes in ROC’s commercial, military and law enforcement businesses. The site requires significant build-outs, code upgrades and other preparatory work, so the company expects production at the site will not begin before 2015.

...

Sources say manufacturing operations in Ilion will not be affected by the expansion and there are no plans to move manufacturing from that site, where Remington has been building firearms for nearly 200 years

Nothing mentioned about what will be made at the new facility in that article.

Syracuse.com said:
...However, State Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney, R-New Hartford, said she doesn't think Remington is going anywhere, according to The Utica Observer Dispatch. Tenney contacted Remington officials Tuesday after hearing about the report.

"They said this happens all the time and they're committed to Ilion," Tenney said. "I'm in business myself. I know they're a big company, and they're always looking for buying other facilities."

Ok, the Assemblywoman says that Remington is committed Illion, and that they add (or are looking to add) large factories all the time. Hmmm................. That's a minor touch in conflict with the yellow hammer news article below.

...The company is viewing the move into Alabama as an expansion, but it will likely impact their Ilion, NY plant as well. The New York facility currently employees around 1,200 people. It is expected to stay open, but with a reduced workforce...

Its important to note that the title to the yellow hammer news article above stated, "Remington Arms moving 2,000+ jobs from NY to Alabama"

Remington's website says the company employs more than 4,200 people at facilities in 14 different states. It's largest and oldest factory, located in Ilion, N.Y., has more than 1 million square feet of production space. Remington has another firearms plant in Mayfield, Ky., and makes ammunition at a large factory in Lonoke, Ark

So, after some searching, no hint of what will be made there, and honestly, even though Remington Outdoor Company owns the Remington brand, it has other brands as well.

Again, I am glad they are making the investment in another facility, but I doubt anyone but the head staff at Remington really know what the future plans are for this facility and others.

Also what I find interesting...The yellow hammer news article list Illion as having 1200 workers. It also mentions that the new facility will have 2000+ workers. Blog.Al.com list Remington has having 4200 workers total in 14 states. So the 2000 of 4200 is a touch less than 50% but its a round number for my simple mind. A 50% increase in workers for one large company though...That is a big jump.

But getting in to the taxes and incentives...Just to put some rough numbers from another article...

blog.al.com said:
The breakdown:
•Property taxes -- $9.5 million
•Sales taxes -- $24.4 million
•Income taxes -- $11.7 million
•Other taxes -- $5.2 million

...

Local and state incentives to attract the oldest arms manufacturer in the United States is $68.9 million, and $14.5 million will come from local sources. Madison County is tasked with providing $2 million of the incentives immediately and $1 million in 2015. The commission has not approved the incentive allocation but will have a chance to do so at its next meeting on Feb. 26.

I confess, after looking at the various articles since they started coming out last week, the only thing that's to be known is they are getting a facility in Alabama, but no real idea on what its use will be in the end. Time will tell the tale over time though.

If you want to know what is being made, for who, for how much, and by who, at least on the military side you can always keep an eye out here.

I use this for job searching, I would rather know who actually has work then just mail out my resume so companies can bid me without necessarily hiring me.

Can anyone say "Mega Shopping Mall", that is about what the one's in Illinois have 1 million sq feet or more.

No more "Gun Valley"...

Is the Remington New York factory in the historic "Gun Valley" region? Or is it up near Buffalo?

Id heard a CNN Business report that praised the AL business climate but other news sources gave the state low scores/reviews(poorly educated labor base, natural disasters, quality of life issues, crime, etc).
I've spent a limited amount of time there so I can't comment.
I've met a few people from AL who were great. :D Very friendly & hard-working.

Huntsville has an established manufacturing base much of which comes from space and defense businesses. They also draw employees from other areas in the region, so they should have no problem finding qualified workers.

Ilion is approximately 1/2 way between Syracuse and Albany along Interstate 90, almost directly North of Cooperstown.

Right, and about an hour and a half from Huntsville is Ft. Payne, which has a huge number of unused manufacturing spaces that used to be sock mills until they all vanished at once and went to the Dominican Republic once CAFTA opened up. So you've got this huge unemployed workforce, dirt-cheap living and empty manufacturing spaces...tons of 'em. Saddest mess I've ever seen.

Oh, and small churches everywhere, a few of which like to handle rattlesnakes on the pulpit on Sundays . But that won't hurt Remington :) who are apparently planning satellite parts plants there.
