New Remington 887 12ga shotgun...

Hi gang;
I normally do not post a lot in the SHOTGUNS section.
I do not have the time/$$$/space to really shoot any long guns or "room brooms". :)
I did get a printed 2011 Remington product catalog and saw a sweet new 12ga shotgun called the 887. Big Green looks like they put a lot of $$$ and R&D into the new shotgun line.
The tactical model 887 looks slick but I wonder if any message board members shot or hunted with this new Remington firearm.

Post away but please keep it directed towards the new 887 model.

Before you make a decision to buy a R-887 go and shoot a mag full of 3-1/2" super-mag shells. :eek: Unless you're shooting water fowl, most folks avoid the big shells like the plague. Sure you can shoot 2-3/4" shells in a R-877; but, every time you cycle that puppy you'll be moving it an unnecessary extra inch and a half -- that's wasted time and energy. If you really like the looks of the R-887, perhaps Remington can send you a poster. :rolleyes:

ps; I'm left handed and I lean towards buying a Browning BPS or a left hand 870(then having a custom shop like Vang or Wilson Combat trick it out). :)
 
The 3.5's don't make that much of a difference. I have shot them many times in an 870. Remington factored that in. I will try to say this tactfully but the 887 was an answer to an non-existent problem and it was not well thought out.

You would be better off to go with an 870 Express 3.5 or 3. I don't know how they do it, but my 3.5 Express kicked less than a Benelli SBE I with 3.5's. I didn't even notice it when duck hunting.

If you want a Remington pump, go with the 870.
 
Remington 887

I purchased the 887 for my son in Dec 2010. It seems like the earlier models had problems, but ours has been flawless with over 1000 rounds run through it. We have bagged rabbits, squirrels, ducks and hundreds of clay pigeons with it. We were on a guided hunt in the marshes of Louisiana and our guide uses the 887 and actually keeps the gun in his boat 24/7, being polymer coated, he does not worry about rust and just gives it a wipe down with Remoil every now and then. A lot of the bad reports are heresay coming from people who have never owned one. I do know some people had problems with the early production 887's but my sons gun has been flawless and only takes about 10 minutes to clean and reassemble. I have no regrets buying this gun and would do so again in a heartbeat.
 
I would think that the 887, as long as the early production gremlins have all been killed off, would be the perfect working gun around the water, or in any high-humidity environment.
 
One of the staff at the clay range I frequent just got an all black 887 and all his buddies were all over it. I just met the guy but hope he would have gotten the skinny on it before buying if it was a stinker.
 
The Browning BPS (pump gun) - is a much better gun / with a solid and proven track record - and a better gun for a leftie in my opinion. The BPS is cast neurtral / and ejects out of the bottom - and I like the location of the safety a lot better than the Remington's. But I'm primarily a "target shotgun" guy ....not a "Tactical shotgun" guy ... / but I still have the BPS's I purchased in the late 70's both in 12ga and 20ga...and they're solid guns ( the model I've bought is the Hunter model ) - but they make a number of models / and a couple in tactical configurations..

Just as a note ....I use Wilson Combat for gunsmithing that I can't do myself on all of my 1911's -- but I don't know if they will work on a Browning BPS ---- you'd have to call them ( there are a lot of 1911's they will not work on ).
 
887 printed listing, Remington chokes...

I read over the 887 listing in the 2011 catalog again & it says the 887 shotguns can fire 2 3/4 or 3" type shells with a "interchangeable" system.

As I put up before, I'm not well versed in shotguns or ammunition.
Does this mean you could safely fire different types of 12ga shells out of the same 887 barrel? Or would you need to install different "chokes" for different size loads?

may be I missed it but what does the 887 offer over the 870?

I am honestly not trying to pick on the 887 its just I guess I don't get it.
