Hey guys, just bought a new R770 pretty nice for the price. I took it out of the box and gave it a good cleaning and noticed that the patches came out with a rusty color?? *** also the action had the same residue, is this normal? Are they using something to "preserve" the barrel or is it rust?

Also, took a look at the barrel by the action and there was white gunk that looked like it was caked on (came of with a brush) but not all of it. Will it be ok to fire with a little left behind?

Congrats to you on getting a new rifle. Give it a good cleaning, and I'm sure whatever it is will come clean, and it will be fine. As long as it's functioning correctly, the gunk and rust color can be cleaned up easily with the right cleaning supplies and a little effort.

Send one down range, I've had good experiences with mine. Do clean it thoroughly though. They fire the guns at the factory so your probably just seeing powder, or else moisture got into the gun somehow.

Always clean your gun before firing it the first time. Doesn't matter if it's new or used. Its not safety first, its safety always.

New guns generally leave the factory coated in a rust preventative. You should clean this coating off and lube your rifle before attempting to fire it.

Two words of advice about your new 770.

1. Sometimes 770's bolt is a little stiff out of the box. I recommend you sit in front of your favorite TV show, "with your gun unloaded" and fully cycle the bolt about 100 times before you go out and shoot it. This will smooth up your bolt action considerably.

2. If you look at where your stock contacts the barrel of your rifle you'll see it looks like the stock is almost molded to your barrel. I free floated the barrel on mine and it moved the point of impact over 4 inches( this shows you how much pressure the stock is putting on the barrel ) and cut the size of my groups in half at 100 yards.

Best of luck on your new rifle.
