New pump

I am in the market for a new pump shotgun. I have considered the new winchester sxp, remington 870, mosberg, benelli nova. I will mainly be useing the gun for shooting clays and some pheasant hunting. Any recomendations on these models or any other models would be appreciated. thank you

Well mossberg is the way to go in my opinion. Remington expresses have been pretty finicky lately with ammo and ejecting problems. the wingmasters are still good as far as i know though.

Don't hesitate to get a benelli or winchester, both are really good guns as well. its really up to what fits you best and what you like the most. all of those are pretty decent guns.

The Winchester SXP/1300 is the "fastest" pump action and price is right but is made in Turkey. Good gun - good deal - worth every penny

What's your anticipated use of the new gun? Budget?

Oops... never mind, you did mention clays and phes.
Have you considered the Browning BPS series of pumps? Have you had a chance to actually try the ones on your list?

BPS and Ithaca 37 will drop the empties at your feet, for pickup.

A handy feature.

But both load from the bottom; may not be your cup of tea.

BPS is heavier, but I like the top tang safety.

37 feels like it "points" a tad faster / smoother.

I have both.

Both are slick and rock solid; not much aftermarket "kewl" junk to add on-but pheasants and clays don't care about "kewl"!

All mentioned are good guns.

The fit and finish of a Wingmaster is consistently very good (it happens I am a Wingmaster fan).

It just might be that there are more 870s out there than all the others combined. Must be a reason for that????:D

I guess I'll be the contrarian, only because you mentioned clays first. Do not get the pump - I know, I know, it's not what you asked, but unless you're ONLY shooting trap singles with some phez, a pump adds a handicap you don't need to be successful for clay doubles. A semi would be better, an O/U even better yet. Just something to consider

Hard to beat a BPS. Solid and reliable, bottom eject, tang safety, while slightly on the heavy side, swings well.

Everybody makes a good pump, you won't go wrong. I'm an 870 man but have not had experience with the new ones ( last 4-5 yrs.)

870 Has been around for ever so you know they must be going something right. I just bought one and i put 200 rounds though it in the first 2 months and its the best shotgun in my family. We have 500 and model 12s and a few other. The 870 is alot nicer and easyer to get stuff for.

As often happens here at the old shotgun debate, some folks start painting with a broad brush. Please, b12alex, be more specific about which 870 you are talking about (Wingmaster, Express, 870P?).

I own several bps, wingmaster 870's and trap model 870's, and model 37's all of which are reliable shotguns. Before I bought a Perazzi, I shot trap with a custom 870, that was my fathers, and he shot trap with it before that. I could not put a number on how many rounds have been put threw that gun with out sounding ridiculous. The receiver eventually did crack on me, (but trust me this is after more rounds than any average person could ever shoot just hunting, or shooting trap occasionally) so I wrote a letter to Remington and they sent me a new one free of charge, and it wasn't a plain jane receiver either, it's beautifully engraved. So basically what I'm getting at after that story is with that experience, I will always put Remington 870's (not the express)above the others.

Sorry remington pump is a great gun. They started with the old wingmasters and then the express. The wingmasters were a nicer action but they make upgrades that you can like or dislike. Its just my 2 cents that the remington pump gun wheather wingmaster , express or whatever else is a very well make and reliable gun.

I have a 870 and i like it a lot. Look for a used wingmaster if you can not afford a new one. if you are going to shoot sporting clays, I garentee your arms well feel like they want to fall off after toting a nova. The Nova is an 8lb gun and the 870 is a 6.5 lb gun. the nova does have a quik detatch mag. tube. Make shure you hold and feel all before you buy one. Good Luck!
