New Pistol...

I was at my favorite gun shop today, just to see what was new. The owner, a former Missouri State Highway Patrol officer, and I have been friends for quite some time. He told me about a fella that was in last week and sold him 4 "NIB" pistols that he had put away for a long time. He had 3 Colt Python's and a S&W 39-2. The Colts were in the 2 1/2, 4 and 6 inch barrel lengths. Beautiful pistols, but out of my price range. The S&W, on the other hand, was right in my budget. It is a 1972 model and was still wrapped in the "oil paper" with the cleaning brush and rod still sealed in the plastic bag.
This is a dandy, light weight 9mm, and just what I was looking for. Very slim for concealed carry. You just don't seem to see the quality of bluing and great Walnut grips with precise checkering on pistols like this anymore.
A question.....Does anyone know if a ambi. safety is available for this model? It looks like one should be able to retro fit one. thanks.

STOP!!! DON'T DO IT!!!,

Why ruin a relic, by customizing it to your taste?
I would leave it just like it came; it would be
worth more in the long run. The 39-2 is one of my
favorite handguns of all time. If you decide you don't like it; by all means, let me know!!!

MOLON LABE!!!

Jailer...

The only time the safety is used on a M39 is to "de-cock and make safe". I'm sure you can fabricate an alternative method to de-cock rather than violate a nice old heater like that!

I have a H&K with de-cocker... I use it, but still put my thumb under the hammer. Old habits die hard.

Don't Gotta....

Actually, I don't have to modify it, as it's no different than my Makarov in that respect. I don't normally carry with the safety on anyway. I had heard that the ambi was an option rather than an add-on.
Ive also heard that they are kind of finicky about ammo. Any feedback on that?

Jailer, the 39 of the vintage you bought was the ONLY 9mm I ever felt comfortable with. I fed mine with a myrade of ammo and neve had a problem with it. Wish I still had it. Enjoy it, it will treat you well!
