New P99 in .40 question

I just added a p-99 in .40 to my small but now growing collection of handguns. I can tell my slide is marked Walther USa on the side so I assume it was made in the USA as opposed to the frame which bares german made markings.
I've read on this board a lot of talk about people returning their P99s because of the US made slide. Is it really that much of a difference? I've only put 200 rounds through it so far and it's run like a champ. The slide is smooth, (after I cleaned it) Is there any proven or documented reasons that the USA slide is so inferior to the german one? Thanks!

I have a "USA" P99 also. Other than having to polish the ramp, it's been good for 400 rounds. The slide is thicker at the front than the Walther one.It looks different under the Walther banner than it does in the manual.A Walther USA rep.(S&W) I talked to, said; the slide was revised for the .40 S&W.
It just depends if you like Smith & Wesson or not.
I don't mind, I have 3 S&W's and they haven't failed me yet.
They've been making guns since 1852, I think they know what they're doing.

:D Let the S&W Flames Burn!!:D

Popy Cock

We sell Walther P-99 in 9mm and 40 caliber every week. This bit about a "German Slide" vs "Smith & Wesson Slide" is all poppy cock. Some people have the misconception of "If it is German, it has to better, dosen't it?" NO NO NO NO
Both slides are equal.

How do the USA and german slides relate to each other in quality? Are they both made of the same material and finished in the same manner? Is the barrel USA or German made on the P99 .40? I don't see any proof marks on it. Thanks

Poppy Cock? If both slides are equal then wouldn't the SW99 be equal to the P99? I don't think so!!! Sorry, but I would not even buy a recoil spring from s&w for fear of getting a POS.

Schild, Just curious but why the strong feelings about S&W? I'm relatively new to the gun scene so I have probably missed some of the history here.

While I looked at and held the SW99 I never fired it. I liked the Ergonomics of the P99 better. But I still don't understand the rational behind the hatred of the US made slide. Am I missing something here?

Jon,

I don't like the U.S. made slides and barrels. They are different in that they are stainless with a melonite finish. The German made ones are steel with Tenifer finish. The U.S. made ones that I have seen have the finish flaking off. They've been gritty when the slide is pulled back and just don't seem to have that nice smooth German quality to them. Does this mean they don't work as well? Probably not.

Personally with me, I just like an all German made gun, if that is what I was intending to buy. I also think the quality is better.

there is a major difference in the way that they are made. for one, the german made slides and barrels each tested and then stamped, the american made ones are batch tested. a random number are taken from each batch and tested, this does not ensure that ALL of them are good and would pass. personally i'd much rather have one that was tested, than one that was not.

I can't find any markings on my barrel. If I have the Walther USA slide do I have a S&W barrel? I don't know if I got a good slide but the slide action is pretty slick. It was gritty when I first got it but a good cleaning later and it was very smooth. Thanks for the responces guys!

JonH,

If you click on the link to my web site below, you can see three properly marked German P99's.
If yours isn't marked like these, you got a S&W knockoff gun!
:barf:

I bet that gets you a lot of hate mail.

A little but the positive comments are the ones that count. ;)

There are a few Glock shooters that I know that no longer send me jokes via email. :D :D :D

I do not think it is a matter of quality, it is a matter of being sold out two years ago by S&W. They sucked Klinton's Richard as hard and well by Monica; however it was the American gun owner that did the f*^^*ing. S&W, if they were not sellouts, may have the beloved feelings us P9940 owners have. But screw them.

I'd rather they get the royalty because I bought something they import, than to pay one dime to them directly or that commie f&()& state (my former home) MA. When they renounce the AGREEMENT, you can buy all of the USA stuff that you want, unitl then, buy the German.
