New Owner Checklist. Any better ideas or thoughts?

So I will be picking up my new XD 9mm SC from the local FFL tomorrow. I picked up a Pearce grip extension for the flush mag. I also got some A-Zoom snap caps as well. Here is my list and what I'm thinking for some other things to get. Any better ideas or suggestions?

1. Otis Cleaning Kit or I was looking at one of the Hoppes Bore Snake kits too

http://www.amazon.com/Otis-Professi...KL5K/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1304025171&sr=8-5

2. Gun Vault Nano 300 for the car trips where I have to lock it away.

http://www.amazon.com/GunVault-NV30...e=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1304025414&sr=1-1

3. Crossbreed Super Tuck at the next gun show in town or possibly the KingTuk

4. I'm looking at the Hornady Critical Defense rounds however after doing a bit of reading I probably want to go with a +P 124 but is clogging on JHP really that common of an issue?

When I clean my HKs, I just use a standard cleaning kit. The bore snakes are nice and work very well. As far as the car gun safe, I can't say because I have never used one myself. I carry an HK45CT everywhere, but it's always on me so I don't need a safe. I can see where it could be handy though if you were somewhere where you couldn't carry a pistol into. As far as ammo is concerned, I think one of the best new rounds out now is the Federal HST ammo. It's listed as law enforcement ammo only, but I know I got an e-mail from Cabelas the other day and they have quite a bit of it for sale. I carry that bullet in 9mm 124 gr. +p in my HK P30. It's one of the best rounds for not plugging up when going through layers of clothing that there is on the market. According to Federal, HST stands for "Hydroshock 2", their older premium bullet. The HST performs much nicer though. Take a look at Federal's website and you can see the HST and how it looks after expansion. Good luck on your search!!

don't forget about something like these:

coupled/doubled over with something like this:

and perhaps a pair of shooting or shatterproof glasses as well.

Yeah I picked up some ear protection the other day, am looking into some safety glasses to wear at the range too.

I was looking at the Federal Hydroshock before and didn't see the most favorable reviews of it. I will definitely take a look at the new version.

Can the XD 9mm use +p+ (I assume this is the 147 gr of most ammo. please correct me if I'm wrong)

I have generally seen the 9mm +P+ loaded in either the 115 gr. bullet or the 124 gr. bullet. Buffalo Bore makes excellent ammo also and they load the 147 gr. +P+ in their lineup. As far as the XD using +P and +P+ ammo, this is a quote from Springfield on that question-

"Due to the fact that our entire line of XD pistols feature fully supported and ramped barrels, using +P and +P+ ammunition will not damage your gun. However, we do recommend that you make sure the ammunition is American made and is in new condition (not repackaged or reloaded.) Due to the increased power of +P and +P+ ammunition, the cycling of your XD may be affected by this different ammunition. If you are planning to use +P or +P+ ammunition, we recommend that you fire it extensively at the range before relying on it for concealed carry or self defense. It is important to ensure that it will run reliable in your XD. Although +P or +P+ ammunition will not damage your XD, a steady diet of this higher power ammunition may decrease the service life of the barrel and/or firearm."

As you can see, you would want to run some of it through your pistol before using it for self-defense. As for me, I had 38 years of federal law enforcement behind me when I retired. I have tried to stay current on what bullets work and which don't, and generally try to carry the best ammo I can that I would bet my life and the life of my family on.

That said, in my HK P30 9mm I carry the Federal HST 124 gr. bullet (non +p). In my HK P2000SK, I carry the Federal HST in 155 gr. 40S&W. In my HK45CT, which is my everyday carry weapon, I carry the Federal HST 45ACP round in 230 gr. +P round.

For information on the HST, check out this page for more information. Please understand that there are many good choices for carry. Some that come to mind in addition to the above listed rounds are the Remington Golden Saber, the Speer Gold Dot, Corbon, and the Winchester Ranger-T ammo.

Good luck with your new pistol!

awsome. Thanks for the help hk45, I'll do some reading on that.

Quick question, how can a bullet have the same primer, same weight and grams and grains but one can be considered +p and the other not.

I was quick looking at the federal link you posted and the two 147 gr 9mm seem to be the same but the +p shows differences only in velocity.

I'm confused.

EDIT: Nevermind, looks like different types of powder burning differently are what help create the differences in pressure.

+1 for the cloth

I have one like that, but it's more silicone filled. I like to run it over the gun each night. The silicone cloth is not for leaving the gun on though.

I'll look into that cloth as well. It it actually coated with something or is it just your basic microfiber type.

Picked up my new XD-9 SC from the shop a little bit ago. Everything looks as it should but I'm a little sad. Beautiful day out today and I don't have time to go to the range.

Tomorrow or Sunday I will have time though.

Congratulations... and too bad you can't get to the range right away.

So, if the Nan 300 is going to live in the car, how are you going to store the gun at home? A small safe for the bedroom might be a good idea, as well.

The one I have is treated with silicone. Mine says not to keep the cloth wrapped around the gun for storage. It is just to wipe it down real quick. I imagine there are others outhouse there to keep wrapped around it.

Currently no children in the house but I am planning on getting a small Stack-On or another Gun Vault safe for the house.
