New Orleans Gun laws/restrictions

Hey all,

I am about to take a trip to New Orleans and need some info.

I am a resident of Florida and have a carry permit there. I know that my ccw is reciprocal in Louisiana but want to know if New Orleans has any special rules I should be aware of.

I plan on visiting the zoo and aquarium there. Am I allowed to carry in those locations? I know that I cant carry anywhere where alcohol is readily served but I don't plan on going anywhere like that besides the casino.

So long and short, Are there any residents or frequent visitors of New Orleans that know what laws or nuances I should know about or big no-nos in this city I should look out for?

NOLA PD appears to make up law as it goes along. You are hereby forewarned. Keep you weapon concealed, because if the cops in New Orleans get it, you may well never see it again. Second Amendment rights are non-existent in NOLA at street level. Basically, the police force there are collectively a bunch of sociopaths, with a few true-blue psychopaths thrown in for good measure. Remember one thing. Too much chocolate can give you heartburn.
 
The best advice I can give is not to do anything to catch a NOLA cop's attention in a negative way. By that, I mean, by being sloppy drunk, getting into a fight, shouting/screaming, etc. Basically, avoid doing all the things that folks are famous for going to NOLA to do. As long as you are reasonably well behaved, you should be just fine. But in NOLA, trouble has a way of finding you - so do everything possible not to let that happen.
 
Traditionally, New Orleans LA has one of the most corrupt police forces in the US. When going there just keep that in mind.
 
I carried in Louisiana nearly every time work led me there (part of my territory for some time), checked it on a plane many times and they only lost my luggage twice - the drowsy-eyed airline employees really perk up when they ask for the contents of the lost baggage and your answer is A PISTOL. They also perk up when you check-in an AR15 for the trip home :D

I don't I never got pulled over so never had any po-po contact anywhere in the state but I'd rather take my chances with corrupt police than some of the people walking down the street in some areas of NOLA.

the "cops" in new orleans decided you need a receipt for any firearm in your vehicle or person. this is not right and its not the law. this is only what i hear or read. i don't know for a fact. im not sure if a concealed handgun permit would help you or not. im so ashamed of my state. its embarrassing. i would never ever go to new orleans without a handgun no matter what.

we are also being oppressed by some of the chemical plants even though we passed a law saying we have the right to bring a firearm in our vehicle to work. the law don't mean much out here.

Huh? That comment in the restricted places just confuses me...are they talking about something like a Congressmens office or what? That statement alone could be applied to a while mess of places I doubt it was intended to cover.
 
Just Got Back From NOLA

Carrying in NOLA deserves an update. It seems concerning restaurants that this is applicable to any establishment that sells alcohol (everywhere practically). New Orleans however gives you no indication that it is illegal to carry in a place, like say Texas with 51% or 30.06 signs. My best advice is to stay concealed and stay out of trouble. I carried everywhere I went, as it is too difficult to discern before entering whether you can legally carry or not.

I believe this is why NOLA has unusually high crime rates compared with other gun friendly cities. On the Surface Louisiana looks gun friendly, but since you can't carry anywhere ever that serves alcohol, you pretty much can't ever carry because everywhere in NOLA serves Alcohol so you are basically left with everyone law abiding being disarmed, as everyone plans to eat lunch/dinner.

Louisiana IS gun friendly. Like so many big cities, NOLA is NOT representative of the State as a whole.

I live and worked over at Fort Polk for 8 months, man neighbors were shooting off their back porch and in their yard all the time. No one ever did anything because it's just normal behavior there farther from the big cities.
 
I spent my honeymoon in New Orleans in the French Quarter. I kept my PA-63 in my Ka-Bar TDI fanny pack (don't laugh) with 2 spare mags, a pocket knife, and all my cash and ID. I don't like carrying a wallet when travelling in a city I don't know, espcially if I am in a major touristy area. My pack never got searched, even at the aquarium, and no one gave me a second look.

That said, I agree with others, who suggested that the best thing to do is make sure your weapon is very well concealed, and blend in as best you can- even if you're blending in as a tourist. :D
 
Check out " legal heat " iphone and Android app. 99¢ and it gives you up to date laws and regs plus lists what each state accepted your ccw permit/licence. Imho best info and updated every time a law or req is changed. It give state no areas ect
 
I was in New Orleans last month. It was hot and humid and that hasn't changed much so bring the smallest pea-shooter you've got. You'll be fine in the French Quarter while the sun is up, but steer clear of Central City; the murder rate is 346/100,000. I'm not kidding. Also bring sunglasses since everyone down there has at least 7 shiny gold teeth that can blind you.
 
Establishments Serving Alcohol

This is hardly effective since more than one place in the Quarter has a walk-up window serving Hurricanes and it is legal to drink alcohol on the street. You can avoid going into a restaurant, yet still drink booze while carrying, is what I'm trying to say. Obviously don't be stupid.

One poster mentioned that getting sloppy drunk will draw unwanted attention. I doubt this as do all the people passed-out on the side walk at 1 p.m. One guy was passed out in Jackson Square wearing a garbage can and nothing else.

It was the strangest place I've ever been to. I doubt I'll go back.

Do not neglect to visit James Cohen and Sons Collectables. 437 Royal St. They have all the Civil War weapons you could imagine. Bring, like, $3,500 with you.

Is that the admission price? Because I've seen a box of Augusta Arsenal Enfield cartridges go for more than that.
