New Oly Arms AR-15 quality

I'm wanting an inexpensive semi-auto rifle for the family to plink with, one of two types: Either an AR-15 or a Ruger Mini Ranch. I like the simplicity of the Ruger and the accuracy of the AR (and easily and cheaply available accessories). I like both rifles. Let's not get too wrapped up in comparisons of the two. I've searched this forum for the last year and can see the controvery that generates.

What I would like to know about it the quality and general reliability of Olympic Arms ARs. They've got a new ".223 Plinker" which can be had for less than $600: 16" 4140 chromemoly steel 1x9 twist bull barrel, A1 sights, single mag, lifetime warranty, hard shipping case, 100% mil-spec compatible. No chrome lined barrel, etc.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Bobbalouie;

I don't claim to be the know-all, end-all AR-15 expert, but I have two Oly AR-15's - one 16" PCR-7 that I bought new, and a 20" PCR-4 that I bought used. I'm very satisfied with the overall quality of both guns. They both shoot very well and will hit whatever I'm good enough to aim them at. My only complaint is an intermittent "feed" problem with the PCR-4 gun. Frankly, until the weather gets a little warmer here on the Great Plains, I'm not going to mess with it, but I suspect that it's a relatively minor problem.

Bottomline, I wouldn't hesitate a minute to buy another Oly.

Oly used to use cast stuff, but they transistioned to forged a few years ago. I have a rifle kit from them (everything included except the lower) and it kicks a**!

I'm kinda wondering about the cast thing, to.

...set of Olympic Arms manufactured cast lower and upper receivers...

I wonder of Oly's gone back to casting.

Neither of the Oly's I've had were cast.

I wouldn't discount this rifle on the cast parts alone. The casting technology being fielded today is quite remarkable.

I dont own an Oly; do own a Bushmaster. I suspect that Oly's are fine AR's. However, having read the responses from their Sales Manager to some of their customers, regarding the customers' rifles that were destroyed in Oly's fire, I'd never buy anything from them. What an arrogant, assinine bunch of buttskerballs!!!

I don't think an AR or a Mini-14 can be construed as an "inexpensive" plinker. I guess, however, it depends on one's definition of "inexpensive." IMHO, $600 is not an inexpensive rifle. No disrespect directed to anyone, :D just thought I would give my .02

No offense taken or disrespect construed. I agree. $600 isn't inexpensive to me either... I've been saving for a while and I'm still saving. Some folk's seem to think, "Hey, why not throw another $600 at it and get a real rifle."

I am actually torn between an M1 (too heavy for my wife), M-14 (can only afford Norinco), lower-end AR-15 (I'm pretty impressed with Bushmaster, but they are really expensive to me), or a Mini (I've got lots of good experience with Ruger). They all have things to commend them to me.

My local dealer is a distributor for Olympic and has offered a pretty killer deal (most of his are).

Thanks for the replies, everyone!
