New (old) Ruger SP101

Wanted one of these for awhile....even though I swore off buying any more guns. Well, I saw an ad on a certain free gun sales website for an SP101....for $350. In "good" condition.

Decided to take a look. (Couldn't hurt to look, right ?) The gun was in excellent condition, with very faint carbon rings on the front of the cylinder. Some slight handling marks, that's all. Well, I got it.....for $325, plus tax.

Cleaned up perfectly. The insides were a bit dusty, but no sign of powder residue. The carbon rings on the cylinder face actually CAME OFF with a little light scrubbing. It appears that this 101 has seen very few rounds....I believe that someone bought it, shot a box or two of ammo through it (maybe not even 1 box), then tossed it into a drawer and never shot it again. It's in that kind of condition.

The serial number indicates that it was made in 1994. So, I got a nearly perfect, 20 year-old SP101, for $346.13, out the door. And it shoots as well as it looks !

Don't ya love it when you luck out like that ? Seldom happens to me....but I'll take it, as they say !

Good score. The price was right too. I think I'll shoot mine this weekend. You've reminded me that a safe or drawer is no place for an SP101.

Great gun!

Excellent! I bought mine new 25 years ago, looks like yours except has a 3" barrel. Trigger is very nice. It's truly a great gun.

new/old SP 101

Congratulations on your acquisition, I just picked up a DAO only model , used, from my regular gun shop. I've been a big fan of Ruger quality and craftsmanship since my youth and have owned several over the years(regrettably traded away) and have re-aquired a few more and will continue on, trading only to get more. I was taken by the SP 101 while looking for a reliable and sturdy CCW piece and just concluded that IMHO, there is nothing that does it for me better than the Ruger in terms of ergonomics, durability, accuracy or design. I can trust my life with this weapon, and , its a total blast to shoot, handles recoil like a champ. You did yourself , and whoever you'll pass it down to, a huge favor, enjoy.

Long time ago I had the SP-101 in .38 spl. Made it DAO (they didn't have that option back then.)

Well sold it to my ex-girl friend.

Ran into another SP-101 just a year ago, again in .38. $300.

Yep, bought that sucker. Still have it and it shoots very well.

Saw one like it in Dallas for $600. Guess it's a collectors item now.

Old SP101's

I have two of these nice "old"SP101's. Both of mine are 22lr's. The first one I bought (used) was a 4 inch. About a week later I went in to the LGS to make a lay away payment on the 4 inch, and they had a 2 inch 22lr. (used) so I put it on layaway to! Both have been fine handguns and for the prices I paid they were both steals. I've been offered obcene amounts of money ffor the 2 incher. Sorry but no sale. I love layaway. I $10 them to death, with out much pain. :D

Now I know why I can't find these deals!
