NEW NRA Magazine Opinions

Some of you may now know "American Guardian" has now been changed to "America's First Freedom".

Although I liked "American Guardian" I really like the new format better. Design is nicer with thicker pages, nice flow from articles through advertisments and it is much thicker.

It appears to be more of a political magazine than personnal defence which the "American Guardian" seemed to follow as a theme. I like the change and feel I am getting a publication worth receiving and worth NRA spending precious money on.

I must respectfully disagree...this is a waste of money. Print on cheaper paper, save the dollars for where they will do the most good.

Bribes.

Err...not bribes, CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS. My bad.

Mainstream ads are a good place to drop a few bucks, but nice heavy paper and lots of slick pictures are not cost effective, especially when they are targeted for the choir, not the misinformed rabble.

Well, I like it but I do agree that I wish they would cut back a lottle on the costs to make it. I haven't seen the numbers but I'll bet they are high. I'm sure the sponsors help though. Anyways, I like the more aggressive version of the Guardian. I think it had a lot to say and really got the message across that they are no longer playing around. Now they just have to back it up with action.

The NRA is attempting to change it's image to counter stereotypes and bring itself into the mainstream. The change will further this cause.

I rather like the new format, and that issue was Eye catching, and Informative. I really think the NRA took a step up on that one.

...“ They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” --Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759.

Whereas, to preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms, and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them; nor does it follow from this, that all promiscuously must go into actual service on every occasion. The mind that aims at a select militia, must be influenced by a truly anti-republican principle; and when we see many men disposed to practice upon it, whenever they can prevail, no wonder true republicans are for carefully guarding against it.
---Richard Henry Lee, The Pennsylvania Gazette, Feb. 20, 1788

I know we might wish they would save the dollars for fighting but I have heard too many times that this guy didn't get his hat or this guy that.

Keep in mind that most of those who signed up in the last few months or years probably comprise of 1/3 or more of the membership. In any organization only a hand few do the work and the rest want entertained. This magazine does just that and in the end it is numbers (votes) that mean more than dollars.

Also if you look at the advertisments I would say from my experience in publishing a newsletter it doesn't cost as much as we would think and there appears to be enough adds to more than pay for the publication. I would say it appears they increased the balance to 50/50 and I saw several full page adds that I didn't remember seeing before except for inside the covers and the back.

I want to say in closing that it will be well worth the cost if it stays political as it will insight newcommers and benchwarmers to part with dollars when the solicitation letters are sent.

I wish I had an opinion on this, I renewed my NRA membership 9 months ago and I have not heard anything from them except "Send Money", no card, no magazine, no replies to my hand written letter, no replies to e-mail no more NRA I guess. The sure as hell took my credit card # and didnt slow down on the way to the bank.

send me your snail mail add and i will mail you my copy.
it is long overdue but i feel the nra is finally awakening to the fact that it is now coming down to the wire, and gun owners are beyond pissed. i like it.
and even though i have mixed feelings on the dubya it is either having a "compassionate" gop or an out for every last gun in private hands dam-a-crat
i know where i stand.

I like the new magazine, but I like American Guardian better. Guardian had a self defense theme. It reviewed weapons, talked about tactics, and gave tips on how to protect yourself, your family, and your home. 1st Freedom is political only. I think the NRA should hae just put out a fourth magazine and left the choice up to the members. I chose American Guardian, not 1st Freedom as my magazine. People who chose Rifleman or Hunter still get the magazines they chose. Why don't I?

Dues money cannot be used to provide Bribes....er....Political Contributions to Candidates. Therefore printing on cheaper paper will have no effect on the amount of graft....er....campaign contributions.

The NRA does seem to be disorganized when it comes to dues, they keep sending me statements after I have already paid my installments for EPL. Perhaps this is a good sign, too many new members to handle.

Political baksheesh comes from your contributions to ILA, not from dues.

One reason to vote in the next Presidential election.

It's the Supreme Court, Stupid!

Whenever I go to a public waiting room (Doctor/Dentist, etc.) I always bring my old Rifleman and Shield magazines to leave there.

I'll do the same with this magazine. It might make a bigger impact than the others.

It might also be an idea to see if you can get your local library a subscription of this or the Rifleman.

Regarding the content (RKBA political), I personally like it a LOT better! The Guardian was just a totally different magazine with a different purpose, so its "loss" will be missed. It had political content, but it "drew" the newbie gun owner/member (who is typically still somewhat of a moderate regarding RKBA) into the magazine with all the newbie-focused articles re guns, home security, shooting 101, etc., then gently introduced the political aspects. "1st Freedom" hits you hard with all the political details, which I love, but wouldn't have enough "gun stuff" to appeal to a newbie gun right protector. At any rate, NRA implies that it might be temporary, as its purpose is to focus in gun rights in this "make-or-break" political election year, which I tend to agree with.

jimc,
Thanks for the offer, my brother-in-law just called and I asked him about the new magazine and he is bringing a copy over tomorrow. I can check it out after we get back from the range.
