New Model Single Six cylinders

I have found a SS in 22lr without the 22mag cylinder. Are SS cylinders considered interchangeable among different single six revolvers? There are individual cylinders in 22lr and 22mag offered online; are they interchangeable, even if they came from an old model SS? I've noticed that these cylinders are not the same on the outside, what variations are there in cylinder style?

Ruger says cylinders have to be fitted. There's a better than even chance that a cylinder bought off the internet will drop right in, but the barrel-cylinder gap might be a little loose, or the cylinder might be a little tight and require some fitting.

Mostly they are a drop in fit. Occasionally you might need to stone a thousandth or two off the face of the gas bushing at the front of the cylinder to get it into the frame but nothing more than that.

You can find cylinders on Ebay and 22 mag cylinders are far more common and sell cheaper than the hard to find 22LR cylinder. Be glad you got it with the 22 cylinder.

I have two Ruger Blackhawk convertible revolvers in .38-40/10mm. After I had purchased my second revolver, I found out I had mixed up the cylinders at the range - it didn't matter which cylinder went in which gun. They've all worked fine for years.

I bought a Single Six with just the magnum cylinder. Everybody I talked to and every forum I went on said they had to be fitted at the factory but I bought a LR cylinder off ebay and not only did it fit and work perfectly the cylinder gap stayed the same.

I'd read that they often need to be hand-fitted, but rolled the dice and bought a random 9mm one from eBay. After a thorough cleaning it fits and functions perfectly in my 357 Blackhawk.

midway sells 8 shot 22lr and 22wmr replacement cylinders made by story for the ruger single six. a $130 8 shot 22wmr story cylinder needed $20 of gunsmith fluffing and 100 range rounds to dial it in. my 5.5” single eight is a perfect shooter and way more accurate than i deserve.
