Anybody heard of a new Model 70 kind of like the Rem PSS that is being marketed by FN?

Evidently FN owns USRAC now.

rgkeller, are you not referring to the Winchester Model 70 Stealth?

You can visit the Winchester to read more about it. And yes, both Browning & Winchester are owned by FN.

No. I was referring to a rifle made by FN using the Model 70 controlled feed action. Heavy barrel, police sniper type of rifle. I think it is called the Special Police.

I believe the Stealth has a push feed action.

I wondered if anyone had handled and/or shot one of the FN's.

I saw one at a gun show last month. I initially thought it was a Rem. PSS until I looked at it closely and it had a claw extractor on it.

It looks like a nice rifle!

The site mentions it has a chrome plated bore to enhance accuracy. I thought chrome plating extended barrel life but reduced accuracy

Am I mistaken on this?

New FN model 70

I have one lying on my bed as I type.............
I'm keeping it for a friend, and it looks very good.
It is a Win 70, and has the claw extractor, and a C lined barrel..............
They claim it's highly accurate, I have never seen a HIGHLY accurate anything with a C Lined bore.
I will be a non believer until he brings me some groups.
That said, IF this combo shoots 3/4-1 moa..........they will have a definite winner.
Imagine if you can, having a rifle you can go shoot, all day and never have to clean copper fouling............
And if it will hold that type of accuracy.......we are gonna see a booku amount of sales........C M bores are virtually maintenance free, and require no break in.............the Jury is out, and here comes da' Judge!!!!!!!:@)

Tshoes, please post the results!!!

It's "conventional wisdom" that claw extractors and Cr lined barrels are not a match winning combination, but for a tactical rifle these characteristics have strong points in favor. If this rifle can shoot, it will be a very strong contender to the ubiquitous Rem PSS.
A three position safety and bolt lock, a detachable box magazine that works, and a steel triggerguard are also pluses.

It's "conventional wisdom" that ....

This "conventional wisdom" has been promulgated primarily by folks selling (much needed) Remington accurization accessories.
I make a practice of building Model Seventy based controlled feed rifles that shoot 1/2MOA or better in .308 and 30-06. Ask Rich Lucibella, he has one of them.

A friend of mine just purchased a Model 70 Classic Featherweight stainless in 30-06 that shoots 1/2 MOA right out of the box, using my "match" grade hunting ammmo load. Basically 50 grains IMR4064 behind a 165 grain Sierra Gameking with Federal match large rifle primers.

The chrome liner is another matter. I have never seen accuracy improved by the application of chrome in a bore, but perhaps they have a surprise of some sort in store for us. Hope springs eternal.

Tiro, hksigwalther.........

Sorry to report, that the NEW FN rifle doesn't have an steel base plate, or trigger guard...........aluminum.....
I personally have nada against a rifle w/ a claw extractor, for hunting..........
They are to me a liability for a Tac/ Leo user........
You need to be able to feed not ONLY from the magazine, or box.......
Sometimes you must single feed, and in a hurry.......
I do think on the plus side, that the detachable mag set up on this unit is hands down far superior to the DM rem models, that are now ancient history...........
i will let ya'll know how she shoots, as my bud will definitely advise me............(:@)

Sorry, forgot to answer your querie, the Win, rem, and FN stocks are all HS Precision's..........on the Tac models.
PSS'S, FN Special POLICE, Stealth's........(:@)

Modern fixed extractor rifles (i.e. the new M70) can feed from the magazine or singly. The old warning about feeding only from the magazine applied to Mauser (and similar) military actions. Commercial actions normally have a beveled extractor and have no problems with single loading.

I remember reading somewhere that chrome-lined bores weren't less accurate by virtue of the fact that they were simply chrome-lined. A mediocre chroming would adversely affect accuracy, but a proper job shouldn't make any difference.

Any Mauser extractor can be bevelled to singlefeed just fine. I did it to my Vz-based gun. I timed myself on single-round feed, and found that just pushing one into the magazine then closing the bolt was just as fast as a direct charge. I think the only place where direct charging of the rifle is an absolute necessity is where you have a detachable mag with feed lips to worry about. In actuality, my Vz always outperformed the Rugers and 700s the other guys used.
