new mini-30 and foreign ammo

Can the new Ruger mini-30s handle steel cased foreign ammo.

I understand the concern over corrosive primers but im more interested in the ability to feed fire and cycle cheap ammo.

If the firing pin isn't hard enough or strong enough to handle it can this be changed for a "heavier" one?

The mini 30 has had issues with hard berdan primmed ammo. There have been reports of broken firing pins. No good aftermarket pins exist and new firing pins for the mini have to be fitted to each bolt. Ruger will not sell firing pins so a broken pin means a trip to Ruger to get it fixed. The other thing that pisses people off is that if you have had a trigger job done to your Mini and send it in for a broken firing pin, they replace all the trigger parts and your trigger job is history.

I shoot a mini 14 and have shot thousands of rounds of steel cased through mine with no issues, but all the steel cased I have shot was boxer primmed.

Yeah...stick with boxer primers. Boxer primed isn't any more expensive than most surplus anyway, and who wants to deal with corrosive primers on a nice stick like the Mini :)

I have a Ruger-Mini 30 and Love it, however the Gun doesn't like berdan primers (Academy's Monarch steel), out of 80 rounds I had 2 FTF, also the steel casings don't cycle as easy as brass.

Point being, stick with boxer brass ammo, and you're mini 30 will serve you well

Save the steel ammo for your SKS or ak-47 (they where designed to shoot them)

Peace,
