Hello all fron Dublin Ireland,
hi my name is Dermot,i live in Ireland,i am a keen hunter, weather it be with dogs or guns,i love my sports,at the moment i have a CZ .22 rifle and a CZ .223 LUX, and a semi auto shotgun,[for rough shooting],the CZ .22 is only used for rabbits or a bit of target shooting, the shotgun is mostly used with the dogs on flushed game and vermin,[foxes and rabbits]i have got myself a CZ.223 lux a month ago and i am only getting used to it,it will be used for fox only,as we dont have anything bigger apart from deer, but we need a license for them as the law here are very strict on who gets them,so thats about it lads and ladies, hopefully i can learn more about shooting and hopefully can gain a bit of advice on different loads i can use in my .223,sadly we dont reload here so the good stuff is a bit more expensive than the rest...thanks all for looking..

Dermot.

First of all welcome to the forum! There are alot of knowledgeable folks on here and I learn something from at least one of them almost every time I log in.

hopefully can gain a bit of advice on different loads i can use in my .223,sadly we dont reload here so the good stuff is a bit more expensive than the rest

Well since your CZ .223 is most likely a 1:12 twist, you should probably stick with ammo that has a 55 gr. bullet or lighter. I'm not sure what the selection is like across the pond, but over here in the US any Winchester, Remington, or Federal ammo with a 55 gr or lighter bullet is what I would get for fox hunting if I didn't reload. Unless you want to save the furs. If that's the case I'd be using any brand of 55 gr. FMJ. Or even the .22lr at close range.

CZ's are popular here as well. I recently bought a 455 varmint and it is the most accurate .22 I've ever owned.

What does an average size deer weigh over there? I have heard they are on the small side. If you ever do any deer hunting that .223 with the proper bullet would be a good rifle to use. Any ammo that has a solid copper or bonded bullet(such as the 50 gr Barnes TSX) short enough to stabilize in a 1:12 twist barrel would work well.

Welcome. Is what you're calling the "CZ .223 Luxe" the same as the CZ 527 ? I'm almost certain that it is.

If it's a 12 twist, good old Winchester White Box 45 grainer will sometimes shoot VERY well in any good rifle.

But CZ made a couple of 527s with a 9 twist. I think the Luxe has always been 12 twist though. Actually, my bad - the 527 Luxe has a 14 twist, so you probably want to stick with 35, 40, & 45 grainers for the most part, or perhaps 50 or 52 grainers at most.

You definitely have a lot of good options, at least if you can find them in stock. Some people say a lot of good about Black Hills ammo, which is a notch cheaper than most premium, but a bit more than Win White Box.

I could've sworn when I looked on the CZ website that the 527 lux had a 1:12 barrel :o must have accidentally been looking at the .222 or something idk. So disregard the 55 gr recommendation. Sorry

Hi and thanks for the warm welcome,i will try and answer all your questions, first of all the .223 is also classed as the 527 and its a 1 in 12 twist, foxes are classed as vermin so not much money made on the furs,i mostly use hollow points when shooting them, the cheap bullets here on this side of the pond are probably american eagle which are around 15 euro a box of 20,they come in a 50 grain hollow point,i have never shoot any higher than that,if your going for good bullets then you pay, hornady can be 35 euro a box or more so when shooting these you make every bullet count, the deer oner here are a bit smaller and some might weigh less than a big dog,you can get them a little bigger if your lucky, you are not allowed to shoot deer with less than a .243 rifle here as the law states,so the .223 is only a vermin rifle, but it does its job,i had it threaded for a suppressor as i found it very loud,it has quietened down a lot,i have a mueller 6x15x50 on it and i found my shooting improved a lot since i got a good scope...what i wanted to ask was..when i target it in,what distance should i target at.

O yes i forgot to say the single set trigger takes a bit of getting used to,its very handy on the precision shot but as i am only a newbie to the center fire rifles i can only improve with time...[i hope]

as i am sure you already know if the set trigger is a bit light for you then you can use it as a normal single stage trigger which is still pretty good

it sucks the price you have to pay for ammunition. here we get pretty good ammunition for the 223 for around 20-25 dollars a box. nato ammo can be had for around 9 dollars a box. not sure what the conversion is but i am sure the euro is worth more than the dollar.

Dia duit agus fáilte a chur roimh an Líne Lámhaigh Foirm Dermot. Nice duine éigin a léamh as an Oileán Emerald Tá Thosaigh ár céimeanna an lá seo.

cén fáth go raibh maith agat as an fáilte deas, agus i mo lingo féin chomh maith, tá súil agam a fhoghlaim as seo site. Thanks lámhach iontach again.Dermot

Lads you have it good over the opposite side of the pond, the led is very cheap there and you can reload aswell, everything here has tax on it,and that,s why everything is so expensive,i have only tried the set trigger a few times, when you want to get that important shot so i tend to keep my trigger finger away from it till the last second, its takes a fair bit to get used to it but i will for sure,1 euro here is equal to about 1 1/3 dollars so you can just imagine how expensive bullets are,so i will keep shooting the golden eagle or federal till i win the lotto, another bullet i seen in a gun shop was called Barnes, not sure if i got the name right, the owner said they were a very good bullet but he is selling his product to me so he would say mass if he thought he was getting a sale,i dont know much about these bullets so maybe you lads could throw some light on these....thanks for reading...

A 55-grain .223 sighted in 1.5" to 2" high at 100 yards will be close to dead-on at 200 and around 5" low at 300. Mine is, anyway. Ruger 22" light sporter.

If the Barnes are a fair price I wod buy them if I were you. Barnes are excellent bullets and their loaded ammunition is usually top shelf as well.

I assume you are talking about loaded ammunition with the Barnes?

Steve, I think most of them do, EXCEPT the Luxe (14). So I guess they made at least 3 different twists in various 527s in .223 rem but the "standard" was 12. CZ is great... they give the customer some nice options.
