Hi all,

Longtime lurker here as well but finally registered. It was O.S.O.K's thread that finally made me post seeing we have some of the same pistols.

I grew up shooting black powder, my dad was a buckskinner and hunter and has made a few of his own rifles. Also used to go to Friendship as a kid (many many years ago, lol). I cut my teeth on black powder.

My interest these days is wholly in the Civil War era. I'm one of those guys that knows tons about everything CW and spend lots of time and energy reading and researching it, also collecting and shooting! I'm a certified buff and amateur historian. I have also visited quite a few battlefields.

So I just thought I would show off my toys! Everyone here likes pictures right?!

big bang, nice kick, lots of smoke! i was shooting .457 balls and loading 45gr.

i shoot 60gr. loads with a .58 caliber minie ball.

Great pics!!

I just posted some more on my thread about my new 3rd model dragoon - 45 grains of powder and .457" balls - that's what I'm gravitating to.

Very nice hardware, esp. the long gun. You obviously take good care of your stuff.
 
Nice BP firearms! I also used to be a big Civil War fan.....visited many battlefields over the years; Appomattox; Fort Monroe; New Market; Petersburg; Vicksburg; Mobile Bay; and, since moving to the area in 2003, Sabine Pass, Tx. Don't have time nowadays to spend on the old hobby, but, still remember my passion for the era back in the day.

You've been to a bunch and different ones from I! I've been to Gettysburg, Shiloh, Chickamauga, Stones River, and Franklin.

I have a good start on my collection. :) Here's my full compliment of Civil War weapons.

I'm going out again next week and will be sure to bring the camera and post some target pics and loads as well.

The pistols are, from left to right, 1860 Army, 1861 Navy and 1850 2nd Model Dragoon. The saber is an 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber, the old Wristbreaker. Sharp too! The muskets are an 1862 Richmond on top and of course the 1861 Springfield. All are replicas.

KW-Bane, the dragoon generates from 376 to 540 foot pounds at the top end of kinetic energy with 140 grain round ball and 200 grain conical.

This compares with:

38 Special 284
38 Special +P 335
9mm Para 368
44 Special 340
45 ACP 370
45 Colt 501
.357 Mag 688
.44 Mag 1120

If the 45 Colt number seems low, consider that it's top end black powder loading was 40 grains - that compares with 50 in the dragoon.

The dragoon was a bad mutha. The 1860, 1858, and other .44's were close behind and all were considered very effective cqc weapons.
 
Absolutely agree with O.S.O.K. The Dragoon IS a bad mutha.

It's very heavy, over 4lbs so it does a good job absorbing some of the kick but it will definitely buck in your hand. Loaded with the full 50gr. powder load it's a beast and delivers serious power. And...it's way fun to shoot!! It certainly draws attention.

Definitely pretty close to a modern .357 or light load .44 in my opinion.

It barks and has alot of bite. I wouldn't want to get hit with any round ball, be it .36 or .44 but the extra charge that the Dragoon has is pretty serious from my observation. Certainly not a trite or archaic weapon in my opinion and it and the Walker did remain the most powerful handguns even after the advent of cartridge revolvers up until the development of the .357 magnum in the early 1900's. To this day I would say the Dragoon has more power than MOST of your modern day equivalents. Add to the fact that it shoots (I shoot round balls, no conicals) a pure lead 140gr. soft round ball and you begin to see the potential for very heavy energy transfer.

Cap and ball sixguns, nothing better!
