Greetings everybody. After lurking at this great site for some time now, I went out today and bought a pristine S&W M42. I doubt it's had more than one or two boxes of ammo run through it.
Picked it up at the Houston Gun Collector's Show. Paid $325 total for it, which I think may be too high. New 642s were going for $329, but you had to pay tax and they have the lock. Too much or not, this gun was too pretty to walk away from.
It was an awesome show this time around. My head was turned by a NIB, never-fired 4-inch 19-3, which was tagged at $395, but I think I could've bought it for $350. Ditto a NIB round-butt Detective Special for the same price.
Interestingly, there were lots of Colts. And the prices pretty much seemed to fit a pattern with one exception. Colt Diamondbacks of apparently equal quality seemed to be priced all over the place from $400 to $900. I'm sure there were some differences between individual guns that would show up with a close inspection, but still there seemed to be substantially more variation than with other models like King Cobras, Pythons and so forth.
