New Marlin 336 30-30

I would like to hear from anyone that has bought a new Marlin 336 30-30 in the past year or two. I'm thinking of getting one but I haven't heard much about them lately. Are they still as good as they use to be? I have an old 336 from 1964 in .35rem. I would like for the new one to last as long and have as many memories as I do with my .35.

I bought one last year...went on sale couldn't pass it up.....fit and finish are ok...but keep in mind I bought the budget model with the cheaper furniture.....it fires and handles just like my old one....safety button on the side is kinda weird at first....but I just don't use it...so it dosn't come into play...I just use the half-cock method of old.....button is just a little distracting at first....I paid about 330 bucks out the door w/ leather sling included....cheap enough ....I expect it will last the rest of my life...I'm 47... and I will hand down to my son...Like I said not a real looker, but I have had nothing happen to make me think it will last any less time than the ones made "back in the day"

Production has been shut down at the new plant on the Marlin leverguns while they try to get a handle on regaining quality again.
QC has been spotty for the past two years.
If you buy one, inspect it closely in person before you put any money out, and that includes making sure it'll chamber a round.

Walk into any gun/pawnshop and there will be several very good used Marlins that will be close to 1/2 the price of the new ones and better quality than most.

Marlin

they're very popular down here in the $200-250 range. mostly in .30-30 but also .35 Rem The older ones have a better feel to me.

Well, I got a $100 gift card from work to Walmart. I was just thinking I could put it towards a new rifle. Maybe I'll look into a .17

+1 on finding a good used one at a pawn shop then spending the 100.00 on ammo.Too many problems with the new rifle's, go to marlin's owners group and you will see why.

Not a 336 but I did pick up a 1895 the other day it seems to be right on par with what most people expect from one.

Fit and finish is just fine. Not great but not bad. I do have to move the rear site a little to the left but that is the only flaw I can see.

It does need the action polished a little which seems to be pretty standard from every one says. From what I have read every one polishes theirs regardless of when they purchased it.

I meet your criteria but can't say how this rifle compares with older models.
I only know mine works very well. But did find one problem. It shoots just fine, but I wanted to try it without the scope. When I removed the scope base, the blued finish under it was all blotched and cruddy looking. I guess that's a good reason why I prefer stainless. I'm sure my new 45-70 Marlin would not have such a crummy looking blemish on the receiver top. The 336 receiver looks so bad I covered it back up with the scope and abandoned my idea of using it with open sights for now. However, it did look like Skinner makes a full length sight in addition to their regular rear sight which only uses the two rear holes. I expect to get the Skinner with the .096 aperature as another member suggested in a different thread. But first some homework to see how wide the bad finish is and how wide the Skinner base is.

i've been thinking of picking up a 45/70 marlin soon....i'll be sure and go over it well before buying...will see if i can find good used one also...but i have been happy with my 336 like i mentioned earlier in the thread....the finish isn't the best as it is the cheap version...but it works flawlessly...guess i got a good one

I will only buy used 336's for now. I've seen several new ones that were lacking in the fit/finish department.

I really wish the savage 99 were still in production by somebody. Elegant looking, rimless and pointed projectiles, and comfortable stocks. Nothing wrong with marlin. They are what they are, and have been good and reliable weapons for a long time. a 99 was a great option without the cowboy look and feel, for a lever gun.

How many of you guys remember seeing photographs of the old deer camps with a dozen guys standing around with SxS shotguns, and not a single rifle in sight? Some places you would hunt by drives. men or dogs sweeping a forest, herding the animals past men in stands.

I'd have to check the catalogs, but I think if the Marlin 336 30-30 was made in stainless that would be the better choice for me. Trouble is, I like the stainless 45-70 so much, I'm not sure I need the 30-30 anymore.

P.S.....

Marlin is now making a 16" barreled version of the 336.....In my mind, more bush friendly....wouldnt mind to have one.......that way i could put a 4X scope my 20" and use the 16 with iron sites...just a thought...

I have a 1946 336 in 30/.30. Mutch better than the newer ones in all ways. But better than a 1964? Maybe, but the 1964 is bound to be better than new. And, the .35 is a great round.

Man O'l man..there are so many nice used guns to be had at the gun shops. I've grown very fond of searching out old Winchester Pump action 12g shotguns and model 94 levers. Don't make the mistake of discounting 'Used' as being old junk  In these hard times..folks are unloading all kinds of nice hardware to make ends meet ;)

I don't look for trophy guns but rather something I can shoot/hunt with safely and stink up with some O'l hopps #9.....plenty of these treasures to be had if you look

I was in WalMart the other day and just happened to glance at the rifles. The 336 looked awful! The wood was the worst I've ever seen. Much worse than another Walmart 336 purchased about 10 years ago. Find a used one or even better, an old Winchester 94!
