New M28

Well I bought the S&W M28 today. I pick it up on the 14th.

Its' a square butt 4" with Hogue rubber grips (to be replaced). I could find no information as to what revision the gun is. The was no "dash" after M28 on the cylinder crane.

The serial # is S21XXXX. Could someone get me an estimated date?

As soon as I take possession, I'll post pictures.

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi Jeff;

Congratulations on your 28. The "Highway Patrolman" is one of the finest of the N-Frame Smiths. I have two and wouldn't part with them.
The date on yours would be 1960-1961. Double check your number. The Standard Catalog places a 1960 model as a "-1".
What is the 3rd. number to the left of the "S". It's possible that your's just slid under the wire befor the change.

more of the #'s

Here's the next # of the serial # you asked about: S215XXX

I was surprised not to see a "dash" after the model #. I didn't think it was an older one and don't know S&W serial #'s.

When I checked out the gun, the timing seemed spot on. Barrel/Cylinder gap came out at .004. At lock up, no front and back movement on the cylinder and very very little on rotation. It checked well on Jim Marches list that I brought with me.

Looking over the gun, I think it was used very little before it got put away. A little rust under the grips on the frame and on the exposed backstrap that will clean up easily enough. It seems very tight. I'll know soon enough as to how it shoots.

Thanks,

Jeff

can't wait

Hogue Rosewood grips are already enroute and will be waiting at home when the pickup date gets here to replace the Hogue rubber grips on now. I'll take some 000 steel wool to the slight rust on the grip frame before I put on the new wood. Then it's off to the range.

Can't wait to get the gun and shoot up the Angeles range for some target and steel plate time.

Now I need to get to get some more cash together to find the the last 3 pistols I want to get before the California laws change in January 2003.

a) a blue Hi-Power
b) either a S&W 625 or 25 in .45ACP
c) a S&W model 36 or model 60

Don't throw those Hogue rubber grips away. I have a 4" model 28 and when I put those rubber grips on it became much easier to shoot even with full power magnum loads.
